Have you seen these things yet?

I am considering getting one of those vs. the Dodge Durango.

The 3.5 Liter V6 has 245 HP and 246 Ft Lbs. Not too bad! And the Infinity version has a 315 HP 4.5 Liter V8!

How come it's so hard to get 300HP out of a stock Dodge truck when these guys keep cramming out these numbers out of smaller, more advanced (and smoother) engines?

Plus they got Continuously Variable Transmissions, continuously variable valve timing, (not the second cam lobe v-tech crap) and all-wheel drive!

For the $29k, you get a lot more than you would with a Durango!

its a Nissan.

fact is the reason Dodge has less HP is the
HP to TQ ratio. the durango was made to
tow...I would pay to see a Nissan murano tow
a 5000lb trailer. all these new fancy SUV's
you see are made to get from home to the
grocery store, pick up the kids from soccer
practice, and do it all without ever having to
use 4wd.

The Infiniti FX45 is one badass SUV. Cool looks and lots of power. That would be my SUV of choice. I like everything about it except the $50,000 price-tag. Get a Durango 5.9 R/T, the Murano is fugly as hell.

Have you seen the new durango body style and power options? I think its a 2004 model, , might be a 2005 but its 15% bigger and has the 345hp Hemi option....if you love durangos it may be worth a wait.

Another option....3 of my friends have done this and i wish i did instead of buying a new durango 4.7. Buy a used durango 4x4 5.9 and then put a supercharger and exhaust on it....cost was total about 20grand and has all the power you will ever need.

Can you still get the 5.9 in the new Durango's?

When I looked at the 4.7 mercedes powered ones at the dealer, I wasn't too impressed with the way it's crammed in there vs. the way the 5.9 sits in there.

And how much more is the Hemi going to be in the Durango?

The FX45 sells for MSRP of just over 44K here in Atlanta...the FX35 is still pretty decent at 280HP from it's VQ35DE 3.5L V6.

I test drove a Murano a couple of weeks ago. It may be fugly, but that continuously variable transmission kicks a$s. There didn't seem to be a speed limiter on the one I was in either, over 200 km/hr and it felt like it could still go. The interior is gorgeous (tan leather and brushed aluminum). Not my cup of tea at all, but a well made vehicle.

paysonbadboy, you can still get a durango with the 5.9 i think only in a SLT 4x4 or RT...

Durango's drop reatail value after the first year and about 8-12k miles....a $35,000 durango used beccomes about 19-25 after first 10-20k miles....think about it, let someone else pay the premium for your car.

That may be a good idea. Buying a Durango used that is.

Not sure how I can swing it yet. My Nissan is still under 2 years old and very upside down. We are also still making payments on the Chrysler. Not sure how you can trade in one used car for another. That's why I figured I would buy another new one. Because they can sometimes bury that sh!te into the paperwork. So for now we're still stuck with two 4 door sedans and no truck damnit! I went an bought a El Camino fix-er-uper from my friend just to haul my Quad and other crap when I need to. I was wanting a Dakota. That's how I found this forum in the first place. So far I am convinced I'll try to pass on the new 4.7 and get a 5.9. And now we have been thinking Durango. Then I saw the Murano and thought it was pretty cool. But again. That would leave me with a vehicle that I couldn't modify like I can on the good old 5.9.

And just to let everyone know, the Infiniti FX series SUV's and the Nissan Murano share very little with each other. They are not on the same platforms. The VQ35DE and the CVT are the only real shared components. Murano is an Altima based platform (hence, FWD or AWD), and the FX series is based on the G35 platform (hance, RWD, AWD). The FX35 is actually a real bang for the buck performer. Close in price to the loaded Murano, RWD, and 280HP 3.5L V6. It's PDQ...

Hey Lesley, can you explain what the continuously variable transmission is and how it works? I think I might have a general idea, but I think I read somewhere that you write about cars for a living and thought I'd let you explain it. I think I remember something about Audi having something like that.

The Nissan Cvt Trans is alot like a high tech snowmobile clutch set up , It never shifts it is continuosly variable so the engine is always in its torque band , Has a felxible steel band that wraps around to variable pullies as the input side gets bigger or smaller the output side gets smaller or bigger "squeezes the belt" and moves the car , Very neat and actually very simple in design , Theres not much in that trans , A belt , 2 pulleys , a very small vavle body and a few sensors , Very basic inside acutally , If you drive a Murano be prepaired because you will to buy it , They are llke nothing I have ever driven and I cant find anything I dont like driving it , I had one in the snow the other day , I mean deep snow and you cannot stop it ! And they are selling like crazy ! Towing Capacity is 3500 lbs not bad for a SUV !

I agree, they are the wombat of the automotive world, but very talented.
The Dude, I design car ads, but write one or two reviews or stories a month so I don't even pretend to be an expert. The CVT tranny is exactly as Joezzzz described it, two pullies with a high strength steel band being squeezed under tremendous force, much like a snowmobile. They are known as "stepless" so there is no lurching - a great thing in a 4x4 where traction could be an issue. Because there is such continuity in the tranny shifing it is also fuel efficient. It's a pretty cool thing to experience, watching it climb up towards the 200 km/hr mark without a change or shift, just a smooth continuum. I was really impressed with the way it handled the deep snow and icy road conditions here. The AWD system senses when you need some extra traction and automatically sends some to the rear wheels, and there was no discernible scooting of the a$$ end or fishtailing even at speed.

Thanks for the info and clarification, guys. Sounds interesting. So, do you think we'll be seeing more and more of these transmissions on the road? How many of the car companies have them in development?
