As far as the this so called "Rumor" is concerned I went in to see about trading by 02 QC 4x4 4.7l for the new 1500 ram hemi, but the salesmen there at the dealership told me they would wait because if you love the dakotas midsize feel, but want the hemi, the 04's will be the truck to get, though they won't be called a dakota anymore. Now, I am not sure if they meant the 04 line up or the year 04. But I will definetly be waiting!

the reason is because only some dealers get r/ts and they only get like 5 or 6 a year they dont make very many of them. And like drew said the hemi is going to be in the dakota but there will be no r/t anymore it might be call somthing differnet but no r/t anymore.

There will be no hemi in the current body-style dakota..... will they put it into the next dakota, probably, because the next durango will have the hemi.
Maybe the salesman was just finding a way for you to leave, because your trade-in value is about half what you owe on that v6, and without a 740 score and 5K down you don't stand a chance of trading it in. (I work for a dealer..)

I heard the same thing from the dealership close to my house... 2004 Dakota R/T w/ the Hemi...

I might just trade in my Dakota 3.9L for one of those, if it's true...

Just need to do some work to it; Fix the dents, fix the DEEP scratches on the door, clean the carpeting on the inside, and put on some seat covers to cover up the cigarette burn on the driver's side seat.:( And probably put the stock airbox back on...

It wouldn't resell for much in its condition... It looks in good condition, but it's been through some torture... Been vandalized a few times.

I work for a Chrysler dealer, and I have not heard of any such thing. They will be putting a hemi in the new Durango and the Dakota will be getting a new look from what they say. The last "rumor" I heard on the powerplant for it was a HO 4.7?? Which wouldn't be all that bad, no hemi but certainly has potential. It would be nice though to have a Hemi R/T (bye bye lightning :)

Guess I will just have to keep building up my 02.

I also work for a local Dodge dealer. I know first hand that they will not offer the 5.7 Hemi in the 04 Dakota. It will, in fact, be the 4.7 HO with a manual transmission included. The reasoning for not offering the 5.7 is that 04 will be the first year for the SRT-10 to be available, and offering the 5.7 in the Dakota could take away from SRT-10 sales. Most people would not spend the extra 15k for similar performance.
There will be a completely new design for the 04 Dakota, and the R/T will still be available. Among the changes will be the newly designed front/rear ends, with optional fender flares, much like that of a lightning, offered on the R/T models. This will give a "tubbed" effect for the huge tires that will be standard.
The 04 Dakota line will be 58% lighter than the current models thanks to body panels and moldings made out of a lightweight material that has been around for years, but never offered on a production vehicle. This material not only will reduce weight by 58%, but will completely remove any chance of dents, scratches, scrapes, or paint fading. It has also been proven to effectively reduce the chance of serious injuries and fatalities by 89%.
The 04 Dakota line will be powerful, lightweight, and very safe thanks to the lightweight material we call N.E.R.F.
The state of the art N.E.R.F. will make washing a breeze, and will eliminate the need for waxing. You can just wring out your body panels and go with N.E.R.F. As for safety, tests have proven that most accidents will be enjoyable and quite exciting thanks to N.E.R.F. Drivers will be able to strike any object and bounce off without any injury or damage. N.E.R.F. will make driving safe, fun, and give unbelievable performance. Matched with the lightweight N.E.R.F. body and the 4.7 H.O. engine with manual transmission, the Dakota R/T will come out on top once again in 2004.

Goodbye HEMI, hello N.E.R.F.

PS this is not a rumor.

I think Dodge will do something good with the Dakota like they've done with the Ram; The Dakotas are great little trucks, I'm glad I got one over a Chevy S10.

I was about to get a '98 S10 (this was around Oct. 2000) at Carmax for $8,000, it was white, still brand-new looking, and had some nice stuff in it. Only draw-back was that it had a 4-cyl.

But instead, I got a '99 Dakota V6:D

I'm happy I did... Bigger engine, more resell value, and more room to modify.

Oh, the R/T Dakota (or whatever it will be called) will absolutely not be able to hang with the new F150 Lightning. The SRT/10 on the other hand, will be able to. remember that the 2004 Lightning will be 500 HP/500 TQ (and still supercharged). It's still going to be the Triton 5.4L (but with a new top end). No stock 2004+ R/T will be able to touch that. Sorry to burst your rumor bubble.

No way a Dakota is going to weigh 2200lbs. Got news for ya...my buddies has a fiberglass/composite S-10 with a 4.3 turbo motor (Cyclone, Typhoon copy) with roll cage. It makes 400hp at the tires and weighs 2600lbs. No way a production mid-sized truck is going to weigh anywhere near that. Sorry, these trucks aint Saturns.
Keep peddling that crap, cause Im not buying. If its true, Ill take 3 servings of "crow" with a side of mashed potatoes and steamed vegetables...oh and a Diet Coke too please...lol

I bet the next ford L doesn't make as much power as the concept. That was a concept and it was pushing some insane amount of boost to get that much power, like 20 psi.
The 04 Dakota will be the same as the 97-03 dakota, it is due to get bigger in 2005, and there is not even supposed to be a Hemi available until 2006 at the eariliest. It's possible they would put the Hemi in the 04 for a last horrah, but no way it will have the manual. On the same line if they go with the HO 4.7 there will still be no manual. The reason is the same reason there is not a manual in the current R/T/ The NV-3500 is not rated for that much torque, and the NV-4500 which is used in the Rams won't fit the Dakota. Maybe in 2005 this will be possible as that Dakota will be as big as the Ram but then what's the whole point of buying a Dakota then? Just buy a Ram now. There is also a smaller truck coming out in 2005, but it will have no v-8 at all. Things can change, but my bet for the next few years Dodge will concentrate on their Ram and the next Durango. It will be 2006 before anything interesting happens with the Dakota again, that's when it should get the PVO/SRT treatment.

uhhh it's not just car-truck but other sources have said it as well. They were going to drop the dakota all together because the Durango is more important and the Durango needed to be bigger to compete. They knew that this would make the Dakota ALMOST as big as a ram so theuy figured just drop it. Now they will keep the Dakota but it will be on the same platform as the Durango, and therefore it will be really close to the Ram. They will try to scale it back in the cab to make it look smaller, but all you get then is less interior with most of the weight anyway. The current Ram is about 600 pounds heavier then a similar style Dakota. You can bet that the next Dakota shaves that down to probably a 200 pound difference at best. I'd be gald to be wrong but whe is the last time any company has redesigned a car let alone a truck and made it smaller?

The dakota and durango already share the same platform. If you looked closely at the wheelbases, you would see that the durango is based off the short wheel base dakota, not the long wheel base that the quad and club cabs are. Since the Ram grows a little each time it is redesigned just like the other full size trucks, there is room for the dakota to get a little larger. I have heard 1/2" wider and 4" longer.
Also, you could build the durango on the longer wheel base and still not have to make the dakota larger. Dodge.com info for durango-193.5" overall length and 116" wb. Dakota cc- 215.10" and 131.20" wb.
