So I just took delivery on a brand new 2003 Dakota, and I'm planning a few mods, one of which is a higher-flowing intake.

In looking at the stock air box, I noticed that air is drawn in from the passenger-side wheel well.

What's the benefit to getting or building a cold-air intake vs. simply replacing the stock air filter with a high-flow version?

It actually seems to me that the stock version, since it doesn't draw air from the engine compartment, may be a better system.

Thoughts?

Thanks,
Chris

The stock set-up, the air actually comes mostly from the base of the windshield, via a passage thru the right fender well. The stock system works pretty damn well!

You didn't mention which engine you got.

On my 4.7, I opted for a 'fernco' 90 fitting, clamped to the TB(throttle body), and a stright piece pf pipe instead of the accordina tube, to the stock air box, with a K&N drop in, took off the eobow at the front, and built a 'air damn' wall going to the opening in the box, and removed the rubber flap beside the radiator. NOw it gets cooler air from the front when moving, and from the fenderwell opening as well, blocking out the hotter engine compartment air.

if you have a 5.9 or 3.9 use the stock airbox with a dropin filter, and take that air duct off the front, get some 4 inch vent hose (dryer exhaust hose works pretty well) cut that rubber flap off of the front and run the tube up to the grill.

Thanks, sounds like this is the way to go.

Any filters out there better than the k&n?

Chris

Will the vent hose through the grill trick really get me that much more air than the stock setup? (any diff. in throttle response/mileage?)

I can’t speak for the K&N. But I have the Intense Performance Z Tube with 7 inch Big Mouth filter. Man did it bring my 4.7 auto to life.
