Subject: 215/75R15 Tires IP: Logged
Message: I need new back tires. These are whats on it now (215/75R15). What would be a tire # to look for tomorrow if I wanted 15 inch tires but a little wider then these. I don't want taller tires because then I would have to get speedometer adjusted correct? I do want to replace these with something a bit wider though but not like stickin out the sides like one of those little go cart lookin Hondas. Thanks

Message: Easy rule of thumb to remember increase width by 20mm
subtract 5% in aspect ratio to maintain same tire height such as a 215/75/15 and a 235/70/15 and a 255/65/15 all have the same overall height or so close that it would not be noticeable all have almost the same revolutions per mile

Message: OK Cool, unfortunately I was either drunk or stoned that day in math class or both. So if the last # says 15 then it's a 15 inch tire right, regardless of the other set of #'s. Which one is the wider tire though, or are they both wider one more then the other? Seriously, thanks for the response.

Message: Example: 255/55/17
255= mm wide the section of the tire is (not tread)
55= % the side wall height is compared to the section width
17= the rim the tire fits
to find O.D.:
25.4mm= 1 inch
255/25.4= 10.0" wide section of tire (fat part not tread)
10"x55%= 5.5"
5.5"x2 because you have 2 side walls,(top/bottom)=
11"
11"+17"= 28"O.D.
the formula is always the same,
Darryl

Message: Sounds like you have the 15x7 rims. If you are gonna keep that rim you ought to get the 255/65-15 size tire. They will fit on your rims just fine. I'm currently running 235/70-15's and its just not enough traction. I'm upgrading to r/t rims soon though.

Message: I found two new firestone wilderness HT's at the u pull a part. They were 225/70R15. I saw a 99 dakota smashed up and went over to look at its tires and thats what it had on were the 225/70R15's. So I found two rangers that were found on road dead and low and behold, both had new firestone wilderness HT'S for spares under the beds. Yee haw! $20.00 a piece. I'm happy :-) Thanks for all the help.

I figured out that web site, it is a good tool if you havent looked at it yet. What it tells me is for every 100 miles with my new tires I will go 1 mile more then I would have on my old ones and at my normal cruising speed I will 3/4 of a MPH faster as far as my speedo reads. I can live with that. Thanks for that web site tip b1llyw, it will come in handy.
