Just took my truck to the dealership to get my new M-1 manifold installed. I had a friend talk to a tech and had him install it on the side. ----Well turns out if your haveing a problem with your oil guage going down during idle and it goes up only with throttle or rpm's but back down again when you let off, and a weird chattering noise from near the valvetrain.----
Now it sounds like the connecting berrings are out of it and its all happend within 10 miles of driving it. Well Follow up when i find out what the problem really is and i should know by monday.

So how much does your oil gaufge go down?? Mine drops to the mark below 40psi at idle, and the mark above 40psi at cruising speeds. Always has always will and I've never had any problems.

Likewise. Down below the lower mark at idle and above the upper mark at speed.
Running 10w-40 (If I can believe the tag on the windshield).
Only prob is the whine between 55mph and 70mph (1.5 and 2.0 on the tach) that varies with the engine speed, but goes away under load (only happens on flat roads under steady speeds).

Gonna talk to the dealer about the noise before the original warranty runs out.

Don't want to scare you, but mine did the same thing. It drops to near zero at idle right?
I pulled my motor to rebuild as a winter project and the cam brearing had all spun out so now i have to get a new block.

Have you replaced the oil pressure sending unit?

Mine droped oil pressure for about a week before the motor blew even though it was still running. If it starts to idle very rough, STOP DRIVING, or more parts will break.

good luck, hope its better than mine

It sounds like your oil pressure is normal. It is supposed to fluctuate with engine speed.

The rattling noise may be your catalytic convertor. Mine started making a rattling sound and at first I thought it was in the engine. Cats are covered under warranty for 8 years or 80,000 miles (or something like that).

is it a 5.9, 5.2 or 4.7, I have a 5.9 liter and the valve train noise is "normal" because of the mechanical valve gear, the oil pressure usually goes down when the engine is at idle that is normal. if you installed the intake and the noise started only after the install there is probably a compatability problem with the intake and engine, the m-1 intake may not be the right intake for your model year engine. I have checked into this and found that the m-1 intake might work on the newer magnum engines but you have to do some mods for it to work properly. KRC Campbell enterprises sells a intake that will work with the newer engines, but you have to buy the install kit also. If the noise is really loud, get it checked out ASAP because there may be no oil reaching the pushrods, rocker arms, etc. Hope this helps

the rattling noice is normal for a magnum motor if its from the valve train. it will sound like a rapid ticking

put a oil pressure gauge on it to make sure if it doesn't go below 6 psi it should be fine. Don't ever trust a stock oil gauge get something with real numbers. Dummy lights/gauges are for... Dummies

lastly if the m1 mod made the rattling worse listen to see if it sounds like sharp popcorn or it sounds like your exhaust is rattling. Have a buddy follow you if there is black smoke during the rattling, or during shifts. than it is likly detonation you've got, try running 92 through it and see if it changes. also a 180 tstat will help if it is detonation. Detonation is basically extra air in the lower manifold area exploding when the cylinder fires, not good, but more octain and 180 will stop it. M1 intake creates more air so it could definatly be a possibilty.

if it only goes to 6 psi and the rattling is from under the valve covers, and the engine is not vibrating any more than usual you will be fine.

janesy, How do bad cam bearings mean you need a new block??? You can replace just the cam bearings. No need for a whole new block, unless you just feel like spending the extra money.

Hey Skyne,

What year truck do you own and how many miles?
I'm starting to hear too many problems with the oil sending unit everywhere I go with the 5.2/5.9L engine. Could be a defect problem with the 2000/2001 and up engines. Small filter cup thingy.

OK hey everyone just got back with my friend at the dealership---
First of all I'll clear some things up. The oil guage was going to 0 and then back to normal after rpm's go up. and its a 5.2 1998 (m-1) k&n gen 2 air, intake throttle body spacer, 86k miles. They havent figured out what the problem is yet, so as of now i haveing a new block being ordered : ( the m-1 was a mopar performace part but i think some of you were right, it was sounding like oil wasnt reaching everying, BUT that was only at like moderate acceleration... ill post more when i get new news. Thanks all

hskr,if you cam bearings wear out then they can be replaced but if they are spun it takes out the casting around the cam journals themselves, so there is no place left to fit the new bearings.

Have you ever seen a trailer axle after the bearing go, they can be welded on there, now imagine it happens in a confined space.

If your droping oil presure then you knew we needed to take it to the dealer. But know you just wanted to take it to your local mechanic
so you can look at his @ss.

you do realize this post is nearly a year old. And if you were planning on building a new motor when your truck came off the road for the winter in a week, would you really give a sh1t what happened to the old motor, I didn't.
