I have a '99 3.9l. The problem is the cat keeps on crapping out. If I go back to the dealer to get another one (it would be 3 so far),I will still have the same trouble later on again. I figure nip it in the bud and upgrade the exhaust.

Any idea what is causing the problem to be sure it won't happen to the performance cat ? Dealer replacement should be free in U.S.A. under federal emissions warranty unless you have unusually high miles for the year.

The dealer has already replaced the cat more than once and I don't want to have to keep going back. I figured by upgrading the cat I would eliminate that. I believe I read that the ceramic in the cat breaks up because of some sort of back flow issue. I never could get a definite answer from the dealer or anyone for that matter.

If you keep burning up stock cats, the aftermarket perforance ons are definitly not the answer. Iwent through three aftermarket cats after removing the factory one before I finally just gutted the cat and was done with it fr good.

Sometimes, the problem is a too rich mixture in the exhaust, 'clogging' it up. Yes, sometimes the material inside does become dislodged creating a problem also. A rattle is often heard then.

No cat is the answer, I had my exhaust shop weld on some 3-bolt header flanges on both sides of my cat. Then fabricate a pipe with flanges on both sides, so I can switch them out when needed. I love the performance without the cat, and it sounds sweet.

Improper ECU managing the delivery of gas/air. Could be an O2 sensor, or if it's a MAF system, it could be that MAF. I dunno much about the 3.9, but I know about smog controlled fuel injected engines.

Kow- I'm not a mechanic so I'm not sure why it's happening. The dealer told me they are not sure why it happens either. I saw my mechanic today and he told me that chrysler's cats are notorious for this sort of thing. If I could figure out the "why" then I guess I could fix it. Any suggestions?

Yeah - if the dealer can't explain it then don't waste your money - let them keep replacing the cat for free under the federal emissions warranty. I regularly get over 100,000 miles out of a cat. They're probably the ones who should be ashamed of your having to return with this problem, not you. What's it doing, clogging up or coming apart and rattling ?

Seems to be breaking up and rattling. I will most likely bring it back to the dealer and have them replace it. I also plan on upgrading with a K&N intake and cat back exhaust. My mechanic says those should make it breathe better and boost the hp a bit.

I'm with Demon Dakota on this one. I think its your air/fuel mixture. A bad or clogged 02 sensor can make your cat go bad. I would suggest having your dealer check your emission sensors. They may have already done this. If so take it somewhere else and get a second opinion. I don't see how 3 cats could have gone bad that fast. I still have my stock cat in '97 after 110,000 mi. If you were going to get a hi-flow for performance reasons I'd say go for it. But I think there may be an under lying reason to why your cats are going bad, which would cause your hi-flow cat to go bad. Then you're screwed out of a $100 or so.

I went through 5 cats! The whole time we were checking fuel air ratios and every other thing you can think of trying to find out what was killing the cats. I have quite a few mods and we were tiring to figure out what was the culprit. Well we finally discovered that small triangular pieces from inside my shortly headers were breaking off and bouncing around inside the front of my cat until it destroyed it which only took a couple of hundred miles once it broke loose. When I collected all the pieces and put them together they form a cone which I’m sure the manufacturer welded inside the shorty headers to help direct air flow originally. The only problem was they obviously didn’t realize that these pieces may break off and then eat the cats. Anyway good luck.

Thanks guys, I will most likely have the dealer do the cat work and get on with the mods I said earlier. The feeling I get from the dealer is that they will replace the cat and they don't care to find out what is causing the trouble.

Mike C - Just wondering how many pieces did you find in front of the cat, 1 per header? Are there still any that could still break off?
