Subject: Flowmaster Rattle IP: Logged
Message: Anyone have problems with an internal rattle on thier flowmaster mufflers? In particular, I have the 50 series dual output. At certain throtle conditions the resonance vibrates the muffler, making it sound like my exhaust is loose. I've had the exhaust checked several times and the sound appears to be from 'inside' the muffler.
Damn shame since the sound was one of the best features of the flowmaster :-(

I would guess that a piece of ceramic from the cat traveled down the pipe and got caught in one of the chambers.

Message: I think Dan is prolly right, I have been using FM for almost 15 years and the benefit of their design IMO is no insulation to break down or pieces to come loose inside unless they were damaged. I have the deltaflow 50 series on mine with no extra noises yet.

Message: I think I know what you're talking about. It's not actually a rattle, more like the exhaust note banging around inside?? Maybe the exhaust pulses pinging against the baffles or something.
I had a FM on mine briefly, a 40series 3" in/out. I tried it both dumped and with a 3" tailpipe. The rattle sounded like a freaking redneck glass pack racking up!!
I blame some of this on the fact that I'm running NO cats. It's like there is nothing in the system to "stabilize" the pulses. I don't know??
I like the way FM's sound, but it just didn't work for me in this particular application. I wound up going with a DynoMax Super Turbo 3" in/out dumped before the axle. I guess the packing and re-directional flow design settled it down a whole bunch. Still has that good deep throaty rumble though.

Message: There is really nothing in a Flowmaster to rattle. I think they are correct in the ceramic diagnosis.

Message: I've been living here in Santa Rosa for about 8 years, and just tonight found out that Flowmaster is right down the street.
Maybe I should volunteer my truck as a test platform.....

Message: There are a couple possible reasons you are hearing a rattle. The flowmaster is a baffled muffler it is possible one of the baffles has broken loose. not likely though flowmasters are good mufflers. another possibility is the exhaust could be hitting the body somewhere. If it is the actual flowmaster cat-back system it is likely your tailpipe is hitting the frame rail or underside of the bed
