Subject: KB Optimizer Pinging ?
IP: Logged

Message:
I got the Optimizer II after I installed the HO cams. The truck is waaayyy faster, smoother, etc, etc...
But after the third tank of California 91 octane (on third tank I used a bottle of Super 104+)
I still get a ping when I give it WOT between 2500 and 3500 rpm in third gear (this is the only time I hear any pinging). I've spoken to KB, and they said that they could "tweak it back a bit" to compensate for the pinging due to Cali. gas.

I want to be sure that IT IS PINGING and that there is nothing else I should check or change before I take it back to KB. I'm going to try a tank of 100/91 octane 50/50 mix just to see for sure if the octane rating is causing the ping.

I have been running the colder Bosch +4s since I bought the truck, and I installed a 180 T-Stat when I got the Optimizer.

Any suggestions ??? Ideas ???

Thank You All !

I also am stuck with California gas and KB told me the only brand of octane booster I should use is NOS off road formula. It's $9 a bottle though.
Water injection can be used on NA engines to help eliminate pinging.

I'm looking at getting a kenne bell... they've assured me i would not have any problems with the optimizer included...... hmmmm... what's the deal with "califormia gas"... I live in canada and always put in 94(ethanol enhanced)... I'd have one hell of a time trying to get the thing back to kenne...

The highest octane I can find in California is 91. The manual from KB says to use 92 min.

The nos Offroad stuff will kill the 02 sensors.. I perfer VP... I hate CA gas.. make sure your cat isn't going out... that will do it... and the octane booster could cause some problems with it.. watch out, most of the higher octane boosters are leaded... bad for our engines..

I'll take that weather trade. It was 90 degrees here last friday. It's nice, but it would also be nice to have a real winter sometime.

One good thing about winter is hitting an empty parking lot and lettin her go.... nothing like doing 60km, cranking the wheel and sliding sidways for a couple hundred yards, fun. Just don't hit a dry spot... ouch...

FYI, those octane boosters in a can are some of the worst snake oil automotive products out there. Not that the ingredients are junk, just that you are paying a ridiculous price for the quantity you get. The main ingredient in these cans is Toluene, along with some lubricants. Where it says on the can it raises your octane level by 3 or 6 points, that means it takes it from 91 to 91.3 or 91.6 It does not raise your octane to 94 or 97 as you would be inclined to believe. That is chemically impossible.

Do yourselfs a favor and save your wallets the hit, read this post the browse to the link within it for more info:

Happy reading.

Are the Bosch +4's that you are using copper core plugs? I tried using non copper (Platinum), but they just didn't run as well.

I've had the Bosch +4 Platinums in my truck since
just after I bought it (30k miles now). Always ran
smooth, never any problem or pings.

I read a LOT about octane boosters (just do a search, you'll find a wealth of info), and it appears to me that the best (and safest) thing
to do is to mix 100 Octane race gas with the 91.

Still hoping for any suggestions of things to check or try to stop the ping (ONLY between 2500 and 3500 rpm, WOT, in Third Gear). . . .

I'll also swap to 3923s to see if it makes any difference (what gap do you use ?) . . .

Thanks Again !

Higher Octane = higher performance?

If there is no predetonation, then I thought it would NOT give any better performance. I think this is a common misconception.

I thought you raise the octane, or retard the timing, to get rid of predetonation(pinging).

Petroleum engineers could help me out on this one, but:

When gas was de-leaded, other additives were added to maintain the same octane rating. By mixing leaded and unleaded gas together, you increase the octane rating, it's not an average. You can't really get leaded gas anymore though, probably a good thing, anything made fairly recently won't do well with lead in the system.

This has been discussed before, that if there is no pinging, then a higher octane rating will not produce more HP.-right?

Todd, you are correct in that higher octane fuels do not, by themselves, offer any increase in performance. As long as you have no detonation, there is no benefit to the higher octane fuel. In an extreme case, the higher octane fuel can actually hinder performance because it is slower burning.

Older leaded fuels cannot be fairly compared to current fuel because the octane rating methods are much different than they were 30 years ago. Finally, you don't want to lump pre-ignition with detonation. Those are two different things.
