Subject: Ram Air, Will this work?? IP: Logged
Message: I have a 94 318 auto 4x4, and i was wonder about ram air. I see that where the airhat leads to the front of the truck next to the radiator, there is a plate over that air tube with an opening in the bottom/side. i was wondering if that was removed and a screen put over it to keep bug and dirt out would that work? This is a rough explanation.

Message: 94Steve,
I have a GenIII, so I'm not sure exactly what you mean, but I know other GenIII guys have removed the plastic flap in the space next to the radiator and in front of the opening for the intake. They don't put any kind of screen in it's place. I've seen this recommended a number of places and suspect you are talking about the same thing, so I think you can do it.

Message: No, I know what you are talking about, but Genll dont have that piece. What it is, is the airhat is round and has a plastic tube coming off of it on the passenger side, it is about 3 or 4 inches in diameter, this goes to the front of the truck next to the radiator, and secures there. There is a hard plastic peice covering it so that nothing will get in the tube and then into the airfilter. But the hard plastic piece is open on the bottom to let air in, can this be removed to let more air in there for in theory, more air=more power.
Thanks, Steve

Message: That little flap is fine to come out as long as you have a filter farther up stream. As far as I can tell that flap is there to keep larger things such as bugs from getting to the air filter. I have removed the flap on mine as well as cutting out the knockout on the otherside (for the shelby's I suppose) and I use them both for my ram air setup.

Message: Have at it...it will work! I had a '92 5.2 with that trick. Actually, it was an old "free horsepower" tip in Mopar Action back in '93. As long as the rest of your air intake functions, about the worst you'll get is half of a yellow jacket or wasp ciculating the outside of your air filter until maintenance rolls around. All I did was to remove the "deflector flap" that prevented poor-man's ram-air. Worked great year round.
