I have a 85 Ram with a 318 and got the wires mixed up.Do you find the #1 plug on the distributor and then follow fireing order right around the dist. cap? Dist. cap has marking of 1 on both sides in the front and arrows going both directions. Do you follow clockwise exactly how the fireing order goes.1,8,4,3,6,5,7,2.

That is the order.
Remove the cap, crank the key and watch the rotation of the rotor. And if the #1 is not marked or has been moved I have a sure fire way that works every time.
Remove the #1 spark plug. Hold your finger onto the spark plug hole and have someone else turn the key to start. Do this with the dist cap off. Everytime the coompression stroke come around and blows hard against your finger watch the rotor and note the postition. Start the #1 spark plug wire there and number them in order around the cap in the direction the rotor turns.
I have watched mechanics with YEARS of experience drop in distributors and turn them all over the place trying to get it right. After they saw what I do they can't believe they never thought of it themselves!
I've torn down engines and put them together from scratch and wired it doing the method I do and I can usually reach in the car and turn the key and it is always close enough to start and idle. Then I just need to time it with the light, or buy ear on older cars.
Hope this helps. I ignore the numbers on the cap myself.

i was asked to help my brother in-law cause he took off all the plugwires on his 318 and he forgot which way they go on please help me with a diagram if you have on..

Ok your intakes should have the numbers in wich the spark plugs line up with. Other than that...your dist. cap should have numbers on it....so look at your dist cap and check with your intake manifold and your wires should line up just fine. If not a chiltons or haines manual should be just fine if the above method doesn't work.
