just curious... has anyone looked into getting one of the Viper big brake kits mounted on their dak? (Baer, Brembo, etc.) it seems more logical than spending $$ on viper brakes and like $750 on the adaptors for them... I would imagine that the mfg or a good machinist could make something fairly easily.

because the brembo kits for the vipers are $3,000 for the front and $5,000 for the rear. i dont know about you, but $8,000 in breaks is a lot of falking money!

as it is, people dont want to spend the money on used stock pices from a viper

Buzz, I'm considering a 14" rotor upgrade on mine. That's why I asked. Already have 13" cross drilled Viper stuff. Need to take it up a notch.

I know it is expensive.... but there are people out there with the $$... aka Scott Q. and 01graphite.... I have seen brembo Viper kits on ebay for $1000 for the 6piston and 14" rotor... very tempting but I have other stuff to buy first... plus would have to buy 20's.... but they would look sooo sweat... 01graphite... you have the best looking dak I have ever seen... I have serious truck envy...

bob, no doubt your ride is tight, but do you really need them? i know your truck is well over the 100mph mark in the 1/4, but the stock viper breaks should be more than enough to stop you....even in a auto cross.

hell, Scott takes the whole rear break assembly off and runs at 125mph in the 1/4, with no problems.

Eric, I come from a shifter kart racing background and I'm a firm believer that you cannot have enough brakes.

You couldn't pay me enough to race anything at 125 mph without brakes all around. Scott only does that because the wheels he uses for slicks are too small. I'm sure he'd prefer not to pull them. He's overheating the fronts big time.

I bought 16" wheels for my slicks for this reason.

I see your point....i guess i have lived in So Cal too long. sitting in this traffic all day, its no wonder why i cant think of spending that kind of cash on breaks...LOL

I know Scott does it because of his rims, but hey, it saves rotational weight!...hehehe

Couldn't agree more; I have an '01 Ram 1500 4x4, and so far the only cross drilled rotors I've found are for pre '99 Rams or '01 2WD Rams...so for the time being, it's Raybestos Brutestop rotors,Hawk Pads & a flush/refill with SBS fluid...

Anyone who finds front cross drilled rotors for my ride from Baer etc. please let me know-thanks!!

any good brake company could make you a set pretty easily... I would check with Stillen.. they make the AP racing brakes for the Dak... The ram bolt pattern is pretty standard, I would call around and see what they can do... it will be expensive though... I would hesitate from drilled rotors on a ram... go with the slotted... less chance of cracking from heat and stress... Look at Stainless Steel brake company... they make a rear disc conversion for the rams and a great set of stock size rotors with slots...

SSB, huh? Will do, thanks for the info....I don't partcularly like slotted rotors-the days of pads gassing on rotors are long gone, but I suppose it would still help preventing pads from 'hydroplaning' on rotors...

Testing done on the Viper brake kit

QC 60-0 in 122'
CC 60-0 in 118'

for comparsion a 03 Z06 stops in 108' and it
weighs 1000lbs less than our trucks

How much more brake do you need..?

Honestly I did a R/C with this setup and you
need to be belted in if the driver hits the
brakes hard.

We did make a change after Bob already
bought his 16" wheels, we are now able to run
15" slicks as long as you have a good rim like
the pro 6 wheel. The cast wheels taper in to
much at the mounting plate.

As for severly overheating my brakes in the 1/4
mi. I did put a light bluing on the rotors at
carlsbad because of the short turn around, but
that soon disappeared after driving.

bottom line is that the viper kit is the best
upgrade aviliable for the dodge dakota and
probally the cheapest 4 wheel disc setup

Scott, to answer your question, "how much brake do you want", as much as I can reasonably get under the truck. Any improvement in stopping power is the bonus round. A difference of only a a couple of feet in a panic stop means the difference between shaking it off or peeling your grill off the guy's car in front of you. Remember, mine's still a daily driver while yours has gone more weekend warrior. I still gotta deal with the stop and go stuff sometimes.

Stop closer to Z06 performance? All the better. I plan to do some autocrossing and when it gets to the tough classes, brakes can make the difference between winning and losing.

You have the double-double for lunch today?

there is a guy that makes an adaptor kit to mount the viper calipers to the dakota... I think I will have one made custom as he wants $750.00 just for the adaptors, and another $750 for the brakes... OUCH... I am searching this as we speak.

The viper upgrade package is very good as far as a comparison to our stock setup.........I am not interested in reinventing the wheel and going to 14 inch rotors........the adaptation of this setup requires some machining and some intuition, not that it cant be done but it is not a task for the weak at heart. There are many considerations for this setup, one being brake bias, many viper big brake kits come with a proportioning valve....not something I wanna mess with. I will have some pics of a bitchin viper setup in the near future on my R/T, with all stock viper and stock viper replacement aftermarket parts. I have investigated the big brake option thoroughly and the viper setup Scott made is a nice upgrade for us that keeps bias as well as usability all in perspective.......

Just my 5.9 cents

Todd

I do like the Viper brakes... don't get me wrong it is a great setup, but when you pay as much for the adaptors as you do for the brakes it dosen't seem right... I kinda see the price increase if it does include a proportioning valve. How are the brackets made? CNC'd or hand machined or are they just metal brackets like the SSBC kit?

Buzz,

I think the adapters cost is purely based on the fact you are paying a machinist to fab them up......Scott is not a machinist and is having an outside source make the plates for him. The plates are CNC'd I do believe out of steel. There is also some machine work that needs to be done to the stock hubs & spindles, which in turn will require your cores when you put the viper kit on and is also . So adapting the big brakes becomes even more of a challenge right there. But a little perspective on the whole thing......

Just a rear disc upgrade package for the dakota is like 900 bux and you are still stuck with the wimpy little rotors.......In reality the viper kit can be put on for 1500 bux. That is a steal for a 'big' brake upgrade, thats what it is for us essentially.

I guess my other 5.9 cents, lol

Todd
