Subject: S10 SS top speed IP: Logged
Message: My friend swears his 94 S-10 super sport 4.3 V6 will run 140. I know theres no way. Maybe 120 but no way 140. Anyone got any ideas how i can prove it? I guess i could race him w/my 2000 V6 but I wold probably lose.
Does anyone know the top speed of the SS's?

Message: The top speed depends on what he's done to it. If the PCM's stock - the rev limiter kicks in at 95mph. If he's reprogrammed it the SS will hit 120mph with the stock rear (3.42) as the motor redlines at 5200rpm. If the rear's been modified to 3.73's or down to 2.73's the top-end will vary. There's no magic to beating the SS. It's the stock 4.3L HO V6. The only difference is the injector placement - depending on the V6 (L35 or LF6). Most SS's have the L35 - 180hp / 230trq.
I used to have an SS - only magic to it is the lowered stance, 16" rims and 55 series rubber. It was slow off the line, but picked up speed quick. Mine had 3.73's in the rear but I wanted quickness, not top end.
How is your Dak setup?

Message: the limiter WILl kick in at 100 MPH if its all stock. My wifes Jimmy calls it quits at 100. it has the 190 Hp 4.3. The SS is more of a appearance package like the R/T vs a Sport model ( for somethign to compare to) Even if they both come with 360 motors. the RT has the lowered suspension and exhaust

Message: Maybe he had installed aftermarket wheels and didn't adjust the speedometer! I don't think the S10 can go that fast.
I drove my Dak R/T (factory wheels, Mopar PCM, K&N, Gibson) serveral time up to 200KPH (about 125mph) on the German Autobahn. The R/T easily could go faster but the speedometer ends at 200KPH so I didn't test it because I didn't want to destroy the speedo cable or the speedo itself.

Message: hey thanks for the responses, i have still been arguing with him and now he says his SS will beat a stock R/T. I say no way. He said he raced stock for stock and beat a brand new R/T!??
Now he has flowmaster exhaust and a "chip" so he says. If its some magic chip that makes an S10 do 140..man I gotta get one of them.
my dakota is V6 basically stock with KN filter, magnaflow exhaust, racing stripes (add at least 50 hp)

Message: When i was comparing the RT and the Sport model i meant it more as both trucks have the same motor granted the RT comes with the 360 i have seen some sport models with 360s also.it was more comparing the RT and sport models since the RT comes with lowered suspension and 17 inch rims and flares and exhaust otherwise its no different. So I was jsut trying to compare the SS S10 model to a normal S10. they are both the same truck except the SS has 16 inch rims ground body kit and lowered suspension and some interior trim difference otherwise its no different. As far as him beating a stock RT I highly doubt it since my 4x4 4.7 dakota can easily leave a S10 behind from a standing start. I raced a S10 on the freeway and pulled on him pretty easily. The speedo only goes up to 110 on most S10 trucks depending on dash guages but I ve seen some with 85 MPH speedo also ( the base models) If he has a chip on it it most likely removed the speed limiter but I dotn know if he will do 140.

Message: The R/T's have a speed sensor in the rear end and it can compensate for changes like gears, but not tire height. It's not like a cable at all.
I have a video of a friend and I running a Beamer on a long straight back road where I buried the speddometer past 120 MPH. This was after I'd put the 4.56 gears in. We later found an online calculator that let us put the RPM's in & the rearend gear & final gear ratio in the trans. to calculate exactly how fast your going at a certain RPM with a specific rear gear and transmision. Even though the speedometer stops at 120 we figured we were going right at 135 MPH with the truck at 4,900-5,000 RPM in overdrive. Had I still had the 3.92 rear gear we would have been going even faster at that RPM! I could have run the truck higher in the RPM's...possibly up to 5,400 RPM's, but just didn't have the balls for it. Plus there was no need, I had passed the Beemer at 100+ MPH with enough room for me to get back into the right lane before letting off. The truck handled great at those speeds, no shaking or floating feeling at all. However I had just installed new Nitto speed rated tires and had the front end aligned. This is not something I have, or will do again, and don't recommend anyone else doing either.
The race with the beamer wasn't planned, he just happened to be there and want to play. We did however plan on videoing what the truck would do on this long, straight stretch of road.

John Lingenfelter would. But then his Sonoma has a 725HP twin turbo LS1 and AWD to do the quarter in 10.2 (before Car and Driver broke the 4L60e transmission). But that was a special car.

Message: I beat a verry modded 4.3 auto shortbed s-10 at the strip it was rebuilt and bored .030 over had a bigger cam and a few other things and my completly stock 99 dakota sport 4x4 club cab 5.2L 5 speed beet him I ran it in 4hi and got a 16.0 at 86 I beleive I didn't lauch it verry well but I still beet him by at least .5 sec. i got the truck to run a 15.6 @92 in 2wd but was having alot of traction problems I hate my open diff I'm instaling a locker soon. I also barely lost to a 350 tpi shortbed auto s-10 in 4 hi I needed to release the clutch slower to get a better launch. I doubt that a 4.3 would go that fast it all depends on how its geared but just about all chevys cut off at 105mph w/ the stock computer.
My dak cuts out at 115MPH but it would have kept going I was only in 4th gear and at 4200 rpm I think and I have 3.55 gears

I kind of LIKED that stock Dodge vehicles usually get 117~120 except some reported Daks only doing like 95 (damn that sux).
My 4X4 did do at least 120 when stock and should do at LEAST 140 now. Not any place for 120 yet alone 140 on the city streets I'm afraid :p
