I've only got it for 4 days. It's a 4x4 Hemi Quad 1500. What a beast, lots of torque.

I drove a reg cab 1500 4x4 hemi auto 3.92 gears lsd with the 20's. I was not that impressed. Maybee it was due to the 20's and the auto, but my old reg cab dakota, 4.7, standard and 3.55 gears was very comparable (stock). I would not be paying 25,000 for that and there is no way that I would trade in my new dak for it!!! quad cab 5.9 auto 4x4 with 3.55. I'm not saying the hemi wasn't nice but I think there is more hype about this engine that anything. Oh yeah if you drive one listen for the pinging the engine does. Maybee I just drove a crappy one I don't know. Also correct me if I'm wrong but Hp is a calculation. Hp is what sells cars and torque is what moves cars. If the hemi has only 25 more torque then where is the BIG difference??? I don't know. Just my .02 cents worth.

HP, torque and RPM are all related. HP is the actual measure of the ability to do mechanical work. The formula is Torque = (5252 x HP)/RPM.

more..

the reason both torque and HP are important is so you can get good performance over the entire RPM range.. It may sound great to say an engine has 250 HP (like some of the little 4 bangers in the Japanese cars) but if the engine only hits that peak at some un-godly high RPM, it doesn't do much good in all around driving. The goal is to get a nice flat high torque curve over the full RPM range

So what is the torque curve like on the hemi????? I have not seen any dyno's on it. I'm just worried that dodge are converting to chevy standards and overating there engines.

Great just what we need another Eng. that is just smart enough to make a fool of himself. You can not measure HP. HP is a derived number. You measure Tq. and rpm at under standard conditions and you derive HP from that. HP is a measure of work performed in given amount of time not the ability or potential for work. A dyno is not able to measure HP it measures Tq. HP is only significant once a body is in motion. HP sustains what torque has accomplished. THe insignificance of HP can be easily seen buy looking at tractors with only 25 HP, Big Rigs with a mere 300-400HP, Huge steam engines with only 30HP running an entire factory!!! Before the ban of exotic fuels in F1 and the lowering of boost presures volkwagen had a 1.2 engine that made over 1200HP but it did not do so until it was weel past 14,000 RPMS My stock 4.7L quad cab could beat it in the 1/4 mile. While I might have maid a few mistakes in my post I feel ok seeing how I am not an "Mech. Eng." that does not understand how torque and HP are measured. P.S. You do want as flat of a HP and Tq. curve as you can get for normaly daily driveing especialy in a car for a truck you are going to work you want 3/4 of the torque avaiable just off idel up to about 1500-2000 rpms you should see HP and Tq. converge at about 3500-4500 RPM's from 3500-4500 rpms torque should drop and HP should increase until you peak.

I do all the layout and design for the weekly auto mag at our newspaper... the dodge dealer was really happy with some ads that I came up with for him, so I jokingly said, well let me drive the hemi when you get one. So, Thursday, he shows up with this one, with 26 kilometers on the odometer and a full tank of gas, and told me to bring it back Monday! Wow! I'm writing a feature review on it also. It has been a blast, it can climb over just about anything. I took it up the steepest gravel hill, all covered in ice adn snow, and it didn't even blink. This truck has 345 hp, that is 100 hp more than the 360- stock. I also drove a 4.7, no way did they compare. Lots, and lots of grunt off the line, you could lose the rear end really easy by mashing the pedal. But very easy to drive for such a big truck. I was really impressed.

Good deal Lesley! I have to agree, in no way is the 4.7 Dakota even comparible. That thing flat out hauls. My uncle bought one when it first came out and my quad has nothing for it. I never noticed any pinging, it does however have a distinct growl to it. I was planning on getting one but I think I am leaning more towrds the diesel even though the new powerstroke spanks it. Oh well, I'd rather be cummin than strokin any day.

Sandman, I guess you missed my point. I DID say that torque is what mattered. I was just trying to point out that it is related to HP. That's why I said the HP number doesn't matter if it only happens at very high RPM, because then it is just a function of running at very high RPM (since the RPM multiplies the Torque number). That's a sales/marketing tool used by all the companies with little high-revving engines to make a good sales pitch. And I do use dynos quite frequently, so I know what they measure. I was just trying to keep the original post simple to show that they are all related. No need to turn it into a flaming battle. It's only a truck and this is only a bulletin board. Life is too short..

Do those Hemi's ( in the quad 4x4's) have some sort of traction control? Like Rosco said,,I wasn't impressed when I drove one,,, and I feel that my 4.7 would spank it. ( I say that with the 4.7 in my '01 CC auto - against a Full size ram reg. cab,,or quad cab)(not the fairest of fights since I'd be lighter :)
I'm pretty sure I looked around to make sure there wasn't any 'traction-assist' feature on when I drove too. Just didn't seem to want to 'roast' those back wheels. Would barely 'bark' them.
Did I miss something? I wasn't babying it either...

This one did. I checked the glove box for a spec manual, but it was empty. However, when I took it offroad, it wouldn't get stuck, the wheels couldn't spin so it must've had posi. I couldn't bark the tires either, but it was really easy to have the rear end scoot out from under you if you weren't careful. No pinging here either, great sounding engine.

remember the electronic throttle and traction control that was discussed on a previous thread. I think it kind of backs you out of the throttle as traction is lost automatically.

That would explain why you have to get 4 wheel ABS with the 5.7 Hemi , they must be using the ABS sensors for traction control

Do you think that it'll beat your 3.9 in the quarter?
