I'm interested in a differential locker, BTW...:)

Message: That test is really quite simple.
1. Shift into gear.
2. Push left foot 1/2 way to floor on brake peddal
3. Put right foot to floor.
4. wait untill you can no longer see behind yourself.
5. leave engine running and hop out to see how many tire marks you left
6. quickly leave the area while evading police
Now, if you saw two black spots you have a posi, limited slip, or anti-spin differential all of which are the same
if you saw one black mark then you have an open diff.
Hope this helps, and please note that this will remove several hundred miles from the life of your rear tire(s).

Message: preceeding step one you must start engine.
preceeding step five you must shift into park or else step six will be MUCH more difficult

Message: Look under the back of the truck on the driver's side of the axle(next to the wheel). If you have limited slip (or trac-loc, whatever dodge calls it) there will be a sticker wrapped around the axle that says trac-loc or something.

Message: If that sticker is missing, jack up rear at differential, shift into neutral. Spin one tire forwards. If other tire goes same direction, you have LSD. If it goes backwards, you have an open rear. When traction is limited I can light up both tires with my open rear - so much for the smart as* answers.

Message: Actually, I've done a few burnouts... It leaves one tiremark, so I guess that means open. It's just that sometimes I swear I hear both tires chirping, so then I thought it might be limited-slip.
And STEVE, what is your problem? There's other messageboards to go to where you can freely hate and ridicule people. They're called Neo-Nazi forums.

Message: Correct me if I'm wrong, but I thought you could also just look at the label in your glove box. It also tells you your gear ratio.

Message: Some people don't have a sticker in the glove box. I have a 1992 Dakota and no sticker in the glovebox. I don't know if it was taken out or Dodge never put it in. I have a 3.9L with 5-speed tranny. Would anybody know off hand if mine is LSD,Posi, etc or open diff?
Thanks
Dan

Message: You can always find a dirt (or grassy) edge next to a pavement road. Put one tire on the pavement, and the other on the dirt. Drop the clutch and see how you move forward (or just listen for the sound of tire peeling out on pavement). If you pretty much stay in the same place, you have an open diff. If you don't dig into the side with less traction, you probably have a lsd. There weren't a lot of lsd's pre 1996. More than likely, yours is open.

Message: Actually kowalski's idea works better than my method, however I find mine to be much more entertaining and faster.
It is possible for two tires to spin if you have an open diff on a slippery surface like snow or wet pavement, but generally my method holds true.

Message: I'm just tired of losing grip in the rain and fish-tailing. I live in North TX, so the weather here changes pretty frequently. It can be sun-shining, 90 degrees, then a few minutes later, it's sub-freezing and snowing. Anti-spin diff. would do good all year round anyway.:)

Message: Anyway, I've got LSD, ordered it with it.
If you're worried about fishtailing on wet pavement, the LSd won't, repeat won't really help with that.
Some say it's worse with LSd. I know I have to be real careful taking wet corners as in from a stoplight. If I'm not careful, the rear end will come all the way around, with the tire and handling 16 X 8 in. rims and all.
Good luck

My tires are pretty bald, that's why I fishtail in the rain a lot.
