My 97 5.2 Auto shifts like crap. At less than half throttle, it shifts okay (oooozy, but okay); at more than half throttle, it revs a good 4-500 rpm for a second or two as it's making it's ooozy shift from 1 to 2 or 2 to 3. This just kills performance. I've done some things to enhance performance with my 5.2; it makes plenty of power, I just can't get it to the pavement. Will a Transgo shift improver kit help this? My transmission guy drove the truck and declared everything (pressure readings, etc.) to be in spec. He said he would install a Transgo kit and do a full service (fluid, filter change) for about $200 (including shift kit). Anybody?

That is a heck of a price, the kit alone is around 100, fluid has to run 20-30, so that sounds like a great deal. Make sure he is using a real Trans-go kit though, not the crappy B&M type. Might cost an extra $50, but well worth it from my research.

Oh yeah, make sure you consult with your tranny guy about what setting and springs he uses on the shift kit. They come with an option of hard shifts or softer shifts, and sometimes you have to put a rister in line with your PCM to make it work right. But once you get it dialed in right your off and running.

Yeah, he said the "pro" kit only costs him $56... doesn't include all of the "hand-holding" stuff that the do-it-yourself kit does, so it's cheaper. Plus, I'm sure he gets a "jobber" price that he is passing on to me. These guys are really great; I feel fortunate to know about them. Tranny shops are just about the worst scammers out there. They've been in business for over 25 years (small independent).

Transgo is a good kit, but if I had to do it all over again I would pick the "Full Race" mode. The Street/Strip just doesn't shift as chrisp as I'd like at WOT! Don't get me wrong mine does shift firm but it isn't "chirp the tires firm" like I would like. But, then again, I have a 2000 5.9 2x4 Durango so I'm kinda heavy and it may effect a Dak differently. But, I say go for it..it does help! Rick

Sorry to jump in on this post but i was wondering if it would be worth installing one of these shift kits on my 91 5.2L with A400 trans. It currently has 99200 on it and by the time i decide to do it it would probbably have 10100 on it. Is it worth doing to this old of a tranny and would it make it last anylonger? I would like to take it to the track and run it but am not sure about the trans. It doesnt leak any fluid and shifts nice the way it is now. I just want to get more power to the payvemet.
Thanks

shift kits are a good way to extend the life of a transmission..they can buy you some time, if not correcting some problems your trans might be having. i would say its worth it, as long as the total is around $200. for that you get a shift kit, and new fluid, as well as inspection?!?! you cant go wrong.

Check your Throtle cable,( kick down cable. That sounds like it is out of adjustment or even strectched... Try to drive like normal. Easy acceleration the truck should shift from 1st to 2nd at about 15 MPH. If not adjust that kick down cable.. let me know .. Joe
