Subject: Powertrax?
IP: Logged

Message:
I have a 98 Sport 4x2 open-diff with the 3.9 and a 5-speed. It's no V-8, but the insurance is better. I have been considering a Powertrax unit for the back and was wondering in anyone has any experience with it. It was rated pretty good in a magazine, but i wanted some other opinions. Also, any other good alternatives.

Schulzie, I do have some experiance with the Powertrax mod, not in a Dakota but in a Jeep. It is a really cheap way to get power to both wheels all the time($500 installed) but can honestly say I would not install them on my 93 4x4. Performance wise, they absolutly do not beat a good limited slip unit(check out the selection at Auburngear.com) and it will be hell on your tires. You might not be able to get a limited slip unit for your truck though, because of the differential size. By the date of this message, you might have done it already anyway.

I have a powertrax in my 94' V8 and I like it so far. I Now have probloms with wheel hop now and again(tim to readjust the traction bars). I didn't find it overly challenging to install and it is a nice addition in the snow. I took it out in about 6 inchs of powder and it seemed to do alright for a 2wd truck.

I have a Lock-Right by Powertrax in the back of my '79 Bronco mud truck. It REALLY helps in the traction in mud and snow. I haven't had any wheel hop, just a clicking as I go around corners. The bronco is quite a bit heavier than a Dakota though. I don't know if the unit for the Dakota is the same style (works the same) as a 9" Ford though. I was thinking about checking one out also for my '01 QC.

Schulzie, I have a Powertrax in my 97 SLT CC and I like it a lot.It was real easy to install and I have had NO tire wear problems at all.Just a little chirping as I make sharp turns. There is a little more drivetrain slap, and maybe some harshness during shifting, but that all goes away.It takes no special tools or knowledge to install and the instructions are very good.My unit has been on for about 30-40k miles with no problems.

One more thing-With anything other than a 'trax unit, you will need to disassemble your entire rear diff. This will cost an extra $500-$700 over and above the cost of the LSD to have a shop do it.But of course if you wanted to change gears anyway, this would be the time to get something like an Auburn or Moroso unit installed at the same time.

I just removed mt Power Trax No slip Diff. I have a 2001 CC, 4.7, 5-speed. It is extremly rough when your install it with a manual trans. I hear that the automatics are alot smoother because of the tourque convertor. When your make a sharp turn under a light throttle the unit locks and unlocks like crazy. The only way to stop it is to put the trans in neutral or step on the gas. The trans also shifts really rough with the power trax. Almost like the syncos are gone. I removed it and all is well know. Maybe the 3.9 will be smoother.

I'll have to agree,it is a bit rougher with a 5 speed, but after a thousand miles or less, the majority of the harshness is smoothed out.Personally,I've never had a problem with the unit locking and unlocking radidly, just a little bit of tire chirping when making U-turns and in parking lots, etc. No complaints from me.

I purchased a powertrax lock right in 1999 for a street rod project I was working on. It took 4 years to complete the project and the powertrax unit I used failed after about 1500 miles. It let both axels disengage and I could not move the vehicle. I called powertrax and am getting the run around because the busniess changed hands a few years ago and the say they don't aknowlage my part because it was made before the company changed hands. Has anyone else experienced this same problem? My part number is VX181A.

I have installed a powertrax N0-slip in my 96 dodge 2500 V10 automatic, Dana 70, 32 spline open rear end. This thing has gotten stuck on wet grass on small slopes. Install was very easy. It is not that noisy and the performance on snow is incredible. Drive Train Specialists (DTS) where I bought it does not recommend them because they say they do not last for long term use. This disturbed me to say the least. Put that mad as hell after I had spent a few hours in 20 degree temps installin the thing. Powertrax is now a Richmond Gear owned company. I called Richmond Gear and they were very unhappy that DTS is spreading this information. Richmond Gear guarantees them for 2 years and have been tracking the life span of the units and have most of them lasting 80,000 to 140,000 miles. I like mine, but we'll see how long it lasts. They say that their research shows that they fail under very rough usage, drag racing, heavy off roading with high HP engines, etc. This is not what they were designed for, although they will work for a while if you need a short term solution to a traction problem. With normal street usage they should be good for a long time.

I have one in my CC V6. I think under the enormous power ;) of the V it should last forever. You do need to modify your driving style around corners but it beats the crap out of the open diff that left me stranded in an icey parking lost last year.

don't forget to use a friction modifier additive in your differential - eliminates clicking/popping on turns with powertrax

Jeff,

Did you try the unit before you put the friction additive in the diff? PowerTrax says that the additive is not required. What additive did you use? I'd like to try the brand you used. My no-slip is very rough and if this helps I will put a bottle in.

Forget the additive, the Powertrax doesn't use
clutches.

By brother had a Powertrax in his '95 'kota
Sport (Reg. cab, short box, 2WD, 318,
5-speed) and it snapped and banged for
about 3 years and 20,000 miles or so 'till it
grenaded.

It was an absolute joke listening to it try to
disengage going around a corner (snap,
snap, bang, crunch, click, click, click).

It's better than an open differential, but I'd
rather pay an extra $200 bucks (for
installation) and get a Mopar Performance
trac-loc.

Although I think the heavier the truck, the better
the Powertrax would work.

You get what you pay for......

Later,
Lemmers

The No-slip in my Dana 70 is quiet. I have to roll down the window and listen closely to hear it click when turning. It has never banged or crunched yet. The lowest estimate I could get to buy and install a posi carrier and set it up in the Dana 70 was over $900. That is why I thought I would try the Powertrax no slip first. We'll see how it goes.

I have a 9.25 auburn in my 98 dak, they come with a four year unlimited mileage warranty. it costs $85 dollars to get a new one, the $85 is for shipping. the truck spins two tires all the time. I do mid summer donuts, sideways all the time. I am the little ass hole kid in my town who "is gonna wrap that damn truck around a tree someday" Old people give me sh!t all the time, anyway....if you buy an expensive good name posi, It will be very aggressive, and work very well, and last a long time. I've had it 2 years, 85000 miles, and beat the hell outta it all the time. never replaced a bearing, bushing or anything except the oil. Just giving my opinion.

I've got the Powertrax No-slip unit in my '00 R/T. I also had the same unit installed in my '99 R/T before I wrecked it. In all, I have about 40K+ miles on the Powertrax with ZERO problems at all. Works great in all conditions, but as mentioned, it takes a little getting used to driving wise because it's a different feel. I have no problems around corners, and only chirp the inside tire on sharp low speed corners. It works awsome at the drag strip. My factory limited slip would often only spin one wheel with slicks at the track. With the Powertrax, they both spin everytime. I would recomend this to anyone who wants a locker, but doesn't want to pay the price for the Detroit or Auburn name. Just remember, at one time Detroit and Auburn were small no name businesses trying to sell a product.
