Subject: HO Cam w/ no intake?

Message:
I've been told that the HO cam swap without the intake can be done and will yeild better low end power vs putting both in and getting more top end power. Anybody care to enlighten me on all this?

yes sorry. The HO cams only vs both the HO intake and the HO cams. Not that I can't afford to do both...it's just that I do alot of pulling and prefer the low to mid power versus the upper end power. So I was trying to decide to do them both or just the cams. I see KRC has a set too, as apposed to the Mopar HO cams. Any one know of any differences? Thanks

I believe the KRC cams are the exact same as the Mopar ones. I'm going down to my local Jeep dealer in the next week or so to order them, since they are factory Jeep parts.
From what I've gathered, the H.O. Intake Manifold frees up some airflow, which reduces low end, so I'm going to skip that. I have an Intense Performance Intake and a Ravin exhaust, though.

That's just what I've heard. Thanks. I think I'll go with the cams only then. so...I have to pick up a set of gaskets, a set of HO cams, and the spanner wrench. Thanks.

I guess while I'm at it here....anyone have their tool left over they'd want to sell/loan. I'm in Michigan. I'd send them back or pay for them outright.....let me know.

If you get the HO CAMS, you will not need any gaskets for the 4.7L. The factory gasket set is reusable, and if you get the cams before you get the Wedge Tool, it can be done without it.CamInstall Without the Wedge tool

I done only the HO CAMS and not the intake and think that my truck runs fine. I have read where others have done one then the other, and have been disapointed with the loss of lowend with the HO INTAKE after the CAMS. I also have the KB Reprogram with mine and have a 3 run Vid to show how well the truck runs with these 2 Items. It can be found at,My Three Little Runs. The First part was supposed to be a 0-60, but I scratched 3rd gear, the second is a 5-100 that worked well and the third is a 0-60 that wasn't to bad but lagged on first gear a bit trying to get the truck pointed back in the right direction.

Jetskier-
You don't need any gaskets, nor a spanner (use a crescent on the main pulley) but I do recommend using a wedge tool...better safe than sorry (easy to make with 1/2 plywood). I also recommend the intake with the cams, they are designed to work together...don't listen to all thay hooey about torque gains with cams and no intake...its negligible, you can't tell! The intake makes your truck run so smooth its like butter! If you do the intake it makes the cam install so much easier too. E-mail me and I will forward you a bunch of hi-res pictures, wedge tool dimensions, notes and manual excerps for the install (its about a 8mb e-mail, so be patient...but well worth it). The intake is only $120 and if you don't like it, it will only take you a 90 minutes to switch back...but I think you will like it, especially with the cams!

Hmmm....Everyone is saying cams only. Even on other web sites. I'm not sure. I think I'll stick with just the cams and then IF there is no change I can order up the intake.

Dr.Dakota, I'd be really interested in the information you have. I'm also looking into the HO cam/intake installation.

Hey Dr Dakota,
I will testify about a torque gain with just the cams. My 2000 4.7 RC 5-speed had a slow power response below 2300RPM and after just the cam change, it will start pulling strong at 1600RPM. It is so easy to get the trunk to haul butt now from a red light without many RPMs.

Also I forgot to mention that my 4.7 runs smoother since the cam change.
