open element filter, 1.7 rollerrockers OR a custom camshaft and 1.6 rr's, performance headers, hi-flow cat, free-flowing catback exhaust, performance PCM, 180 t-stat, replace belt-fan w/ electric fan, shorter gears, ported heads, custom intake manifold, bigger injectors, new ignition and coil...

Should get the V6 well into the 15's.

alot of money for one. the listed mods above will
work and get you into the 15s to hang with stock
rt's but need to do some more if your gonna beat
em. need some kind of forced air induction then
you should be alright along with the rest of the
above mods

I had a 96 camaro with the 3.8 v6 and after about $1000 of work i still couldnt hang with a R/T, now look what i drive. You could spend a ton of money just to be able to keep up much less beat one. Most guys who have a R/T are moding them just like you are modding your truck so you would be fighting an uphill battle, if you are really serious about dumping some money into something and can afford it I suggest you trade your truck in, you will be much happier, parts are easier to find, I loved my camaro but i have been so happy with my truck i have never looked back

thanx guys..

Would putting a turbo or supercharger make a big difference ? *along w/ other mods?* Which is better?

Im interested in taking this route b/c I looked into an r/t yesterday and its approx 32000 for a 03' cc r/t etc... And WITH MY truck as a trade in *00'clubcab3.9 mint" there is still approx. 12000 + difference !!!!

So i'd be giving up my brand new truck and also forking out 12000 *canadian* just to have an R/T ! I dont want a Street Screamer .. Just something that is about as fast as an R/T or a Bit faster. thats all i ask of my good ol 3.9!

Thnx.. BlkDak

BlkDak,

Buy a used R/T, much cheaper than a new one. I'm sure you can find a '00 or older for 16 or 17K (US). I purchased a used R/T for 14K out the door. The '00 and older don't have the three cats and better interiors (IMO). Just something to consider.

I'm not sure what 12,000 canadian equals to in US currency. But you're prolly going to spend close to that, trying to get a 3.9 to keep up with a 5.9.Why not just drop a V8 crate engine in it? Either that,or take a trip down to the states and buy an RT,I only paid $21,900(US $) for a fully loaded 01' CC RT....just some food for thought.

I think I would tend to agree. If you're looking for performance, better to just get a used R/T. Otherwise, you will spend a lot of cash, and then find that you are frustrated because you want to go faster but have reached its limit. At least, with the V8, you will be starting out approx. where the V6's capabilities end.

BlkDak,

There's a guy on the v8 forum that is selling his slightly modded R/T for $12,500. You might want to check it out.

nitrous = $500 = 100 hp (150 hp if you really want to replace that V6)

that would be the easiest, least expensive route.

my truck could beat some modded RT's with these mods:
cold air intake $260
throttle body $150
msd 6a ignition $150
msd 8.5 wires $65
msd blaster coil $25
1.7 crower r/r $325
jba headers $340
flowmaster $65
jet II module $200
LOTS OF WEIGHT REDUCTION!!!!

at that point i could just stay ahead of most RT's (most!!! not all!!!!). that was around $1600 in mods too my regular cab. I did have other stuff but those were the neccessities

I also have to agree with these guys (and gals). If you're looking for V8/RT performance, forget trying to get there with the V6. Sure, a V6 CAN be made to run quick, but the $$ and the extreme measures that you have to take to get it there just aren't worth it, IMHO.

I've got a 2002 V6, and I've spent over $1K in mufflers, F&B TB, intake, MSD wires, 1.7 rockers, and a few other little odds 'n ends, and it still feels like a V6. Worse yet, it SOUNDS like a V6. I could keep it and be satisfied with it...I don't have any problem keeping up with traffic, but it just plain doesn't perform or sound like I want it to, because it's a V6. If I decide that I must have more performance, I'll trade it on a 1500 RAM HEMI RC SLT shortbed when they become available. I'm not dumping more money into this truck, and still have a V6. That's just my .02.

I bought my 92 for $900. I've put close to $900 in mods for it. It's base 1/4 mile was 17.1, and now should be in high 15's. That's a huge difference!! My truck has reacted to mods very well and I'm very pleased with the performance. A friend of mine has a 02 R/T and it ran a best of 15.7. I should be able to give him a run for his money. That's funny because his truck costs over 10 times more!!

see now the v-6 wont handle the v-8 mod for mod
but with enough work she'll suprise some people.
when you have a v-6 running 12s. thats impressive.
and that'll shock some v-8s. granted it take a few
grand but thats part of the challenge. building
somethin is the best part of it. if my v-6 tweaks
out at a 12 sec 1/4 and i can;t do anyhting more
thats find i'm happy with that because i turned a
17sec brick into a 12 sec beast. thats
respectable. and then its on to a bigger badder
engine in a differnt truck.

normally i would agree with everyone and say 'buy an r/t, or buy a v8'...but take a look at bernd...he can smoke stock/lightly modded r/t's..in a v6.. (dont burn me, guys, im just making a point)...it can be done. if you love the truck, shove a 360 in there, or a hemi,...youve probably voided your warranty already SOMEHOW..theres SO many ways nowdays..go for the gusto...get a 360 and a mopar performance pcm..youll be very happy with the results, or for roughly the same price get a supercharger and some headers or something..either way, the cheapest route to go on modding your v6 would be a blower or a heavy dose of n20..but listen to people when they say there IS a limit on how much you can spray into a 3.9...its a strong motor...but not that strong.
good luck!

Its something to think about for sure.
What about gas consumption ? Another thing im worried about is picking up someones used r/t that has been abused...

I very much agree w/ the point that it would be better to "start out" with a v8 as oppossed to working out all these mods to just be as fast a v8....

even when im nice to my r/t i can only get 225-230 miles out of 18 gallons of fuel...thats mixed highway/city driving...works out to about 12.75 mpg. i would be worried too about buying one used, but thats what i did...and the BEST way to tell is to buy one with under 30,000mi, and if its still riding on the factory rsa's with some tread, you have one in good shape...the good thing about buying an r/t is there arent a whole lot of ways to 'beat on' one..aside from flooring it alot, (which i do and have NO problems), and hard braking, what can you do thats bad for the truck? i broke my p/s pump by doing a donut on a not-so-smooth street...thats about it. but if you are worried about fuel economy, stay with the v6...you will not be happy with the 360's gas mileage LOL

Probably the cheapest thing to do is an engine swap - if you're mechanically inclined you can swap in a 360/46re the right way for about $2,500 and then sell off you're stock V6 , tranny , and computer.

One of my buddys did his '97 4 banger 5 speed for about $2,000 - he got a deal on the front half of a '99 Durango with a 360 and 46re . The headgasket let go on the 2.5 and filled a few cyls with water - it was going to be $1,500 to rebuild it so he went bigger.

sorry, rsa's=goodyear rs-a tires...ya know...those pieces of sh1t the put on there from the factory...WORST TIRE EVER. at least they didnt give us the donut spare tires.

im just assuming mine were factory cuz when i bought the r/t it had 25k and change, and still had the goodyear rsa's..in between the treads i could tell that the tires were not brand new, and they were worn to right about where they shouldve been..had to replace em 3 months later, but i expected it...anyway, i recently found out that either my truck had a nasty factory recall, or theres a sticker inside my door for no reason..also carfax said my truck had flood damage...if it has, i havent noticed anything.
anyway, for mileage, im sort of scared to figure it out, but youve got me intrigued..here goes..ive put on 15k in a year, and ill average 1.45/gal (chicago) for gas, at what ill call 11 mpg, that equals out to around $2000 on fuel in about 8 months. holy sh1t...thats awful.

i think im going outside and pulling 4 spark plug wires off, and backing my timing out by about 20 degrees.

yikes.
