Subject: Z Tube Cool Air Intake question IP: Logged
Message: I've heard that a lot of guys are using a "Z tube" or similar device to relocate the filter right down next to the radiatior on their 4.7 and removing the plastic piece on the passenger side of the radiator to allow more cool air into the engine compartment. Has anyone had a problem with rain coming through the front of the grill and saturating the filter element?
Why wouldn't that be a problem?

Message: I have that exact setup on my truck. It's not a problem because the filter doesn't line up with the hole in the fender due to some hunk of metal in the way (looks almost like part of the PCM?). The filter is actually off to the side from the hole. So, the cool air gets in, but the water just kind of drizzles into an empty pocket or slams into that metal thing.

no really, doesn't seem to be a problem.
I think it seems from what I've heard, that the 'ram' effect is so negligeable, that I'll go back to my elbow to the fender well, which gets it's air from the cowl area under the windshield.
If you're not moving, you're only getting the under hood air, when moving, still a mixture. I think the engineers might have been on to something there with the fender well thing.

Message: I looked at the Intense performance set up for quite some time.
I decided not to go with it because the "Ultra Pimp" setup the stage III for the 4.7 encapsulates the cone filter and then runs hose to the stock baffle chamber just like the stock setup. the only benefit that I could see would be the smoother path for the air to flow and I could not see spending $300 for that yet.
I opted to just drop in a K&N filter.
Let me know if anyone is seing some good performance gains from these setups.

Message: The K&N re-usable filters are covered with oil, oil repels water...therefore water doesn't get in the air filter.
