Subject: Electric Fan Install, Is it worth it ?? IP: Logged
Message: I read the other day that installing an electric fan could add up to 15 to 20 hp ?? Any truth to this ? I'd also like to hear if anyone has done it and what all is involved. Would it require a new shorter belt with the fan removed and would the stock alternator be enough juice to run the new one ?

Message: I dont know about the 15 to 20 hp, but i do know its alot smoother at higher RPM's with an electric fan. I felt a little increase in the Butt-O-Meter but every little bit help. You dont need a new belt because your pulley stays the same, you just take the fan off. Your regular alternator should be plenty sufficient to run it, at least mine was. All in all i think it was well worth it.

Message: If you have a older Dakota with a clutch fan and no electric fan mounted between the AC and rad , it will help power a bit and realy help MPG!!! 2mpg better is a big gain, and that is what I got from a black magic 150 on my '97 5.2. The Black Magic 150 is about the only one that with keep a V8 Dakota cool.

Message: I'll second the mileage increase. I got 2mpg on my 2000 3.9 v-6. I also used the black magic 150.
Seat of the pants says there is a little more power, but i don't have any other way to prove that.

Message: I am looking at adding an electric fan to my Dak. I some questions about the electric fan units. What other brands of electic fans are out there and does anybody have them? I have seen ads for the Hayden electric fan, is this one any good? And which one fits best. Also the alternators ability to run everything is my main concern. Currently i have 2 amps (300 Watt and a 400 watt amp) running my speakers and subs. In addition to all of this i have the fog lights A/C etc. Is there any way to add a second battery or will an optima battery be good enough. Thanks for the help.

If you were to do anything, I would tell you to get your stock alternator rewound at an alternator shop, so that it has a higher amperage output. This would be the best and most effecient, and most cost effective, way to upgrade your electrical system to handle everything.
The black magic 150 I believe draws something like 18 amps at most, so it isn't an enormous load.
The alt rewind would cost anywhere from 100-170 or so. But then if you consider that the cheapest I've seen an optima yellow top go for was arouund 80 bucks, and consider the effectiveness of an alt rewind, it's definitely worth it.
Don't do anything till you install it and find out if you in fact DO have voltage drops or not.
Hope this answers a lil of your questions, as for the actual different fans, can't help there :)

Message: Waltherone -- thanks for the info, i'm going to take your advice and see how the amp holds up with the electric fan installed. Then depending on what it does i'll look at the amp/battery.
Thanks again for your help.

Message: Waterpolo,
I have about a 1200 watt system in my truck (PPI amps), and I have no issues with voltage drop or lack of charging capacity. I also have fog lights, etc, and the Black magic 150 fan. And I still have the stock battery.
Everybody I asked about different fans said that the black magic was the best fan to buy. I think hayden makes a decent fan, but it isn't quite as good, and doesn't come complete with thermostat, etc. There is also permacool, but they don't flow as well.
I installed my fan in an afternoon in the driveway. I also kept the factory electric fan in place. The factory will come on about 220 degrees, and the new fan is set to come on around 200. Between them, it stays cool all the time, even idling in 90 degree weather.

Message: My 01 4.7 came with an elec fan!
I"m guessing yours doesn't have one already.
After I took of my belt fan/clutch, and put a 180t-stat in there, runs real cool, summer or winter.
