Message: the other day in auto class my teacher cut off my cat converter, gutted it and welded it back on.
let me be the first to tell you......ITS GREAT
its just a little louder, revs to red line faster and when racing my buddies, it pulls much harder between 2500-3500 rpm's.
the only problem is that it feels like it has a dead spot between 1800-2000 rpm's
a 50 sieres flowmaster dual system with a gutted kat sounds like a 40 sieries with the kat.
93 dark green dak, flomaster 50 series, gutted kat

Message: smartass , theres an O2 sensor after the cat. If the cat inst doing its job , the O2 sensor will know it and send a signal to the computer and trip a code (in most cases). There is a thing called a Katbox to eliminate the code thing. Not exactly sure what it does but it fools the computer into thinking that the cat is doing its job.
But you wouldnt know that. Youre just here to insult people.
Do you even own a Dakota ? No , you dont ,so why are you here ?
Dogliftsleg and it gets a size 13 boot in the plums.

I lost a ton of torque and HP through all ranges when I took mine off.

Message: big_torque....no offence man but only the later model daks have a sensor after the cat. For sure '95 and older only have one ahead of the cat and removing the cat in these has no effect on the computer.
cryppie...I removed the cat on my '92 at the track and improved a couple hundredths in ET. No noticable difference in driveability. Of course my original cat is 3" in/out. I guess each combination works differently.:-)

Message: YOu will only throw a code on vehicles with OBD II ( 96 and newer). They have a sensor(s) before the cat and a sensor(s) after the cat. When the PCM sences no differance between the pre-cat and after-cat O2 sensor, then a code is thrown. Earlier vehicles with only pre cat O2 sensors that are multiple wire jobs (heated) you won't have any problems.

Message: I should have read the post before I did what I did. I think PETA is going to be after me when they find out I gutted my cat. Slit her from chin to tail and let it all hang out, so to speak. It was messy, but she did acclerate alot faster.

Message: Wow,
YOU guys and gals think that all Dak engines, and all years are the same!
MY 01 4.7, has 3 cats. 02 sensors before and after the two on the headers, and none on the third cat after the y pipe.
Many have gutted, or removed the third on my yr/model set-up w/o problems. You can even get a resister to take out the two on the Y pipe if you want to.
So many opinions, knowing a little about one yr/size engine on this forum at times.

Message: Torque,
Just FYI. The O2 sensor works by sending a certain voltage to the computer. As the oxygen level varies the sensor varies the voltage it sends back to the computer. That's how the computer knows how much O2 is there. The Katbox plugs in to the wiring harness of the removed O2 sensor and sends a voltage that tells the computer everything is OK.
