Subject: Too much of a good thing? IP: Logged
Message: Hi,
I've got a 2000 4.7L, 5 speed, 3.92 Trac-Lok, 4x4 Quad. I've only made two modifications from stock. First I added an Airaid system and seemed to see a little better acceleration from about 2000 rpm up as judged by the ever accurate "seat of my pants." Yesterday I had the stock exhaust replaced with a 3" inlet (the 3" pipe starts just behind the crossmember behind the stock cat) and dual 2 1/4" outlets muffler. I unhooked the battery to allow the computer to reset itself to the breathing changes. (I read this was a good idea.) The truck sounds great. But, it seems to me that the truck now accelerates slower up to about 3000 rpm and then picks up some power above that.
What I'm wondering is if a 3" inlet was too much and actually could have hurt my bottom end, or if this is just my imagination. Any thoughts?
Also, how do you think a 1" TB spacer would help or hurt my situation? What are some other ways to cost effectively pick up bottom end acceleration? Not building a race car here.....just looking for stop light to stop light acceleration (torque) and maybe a little better city gas mileage. Thanks guys.

Message: From what I've read here, and seen dyno posts on,
yep, what you did to the exhaust killed it.
About the TB spacer for the 4.7, do a search here on the subject, most now use them as paperweights.
01, QC, 4.7, HO cams, home brew air, 5spd manual, etc.
If you want a good increase in torque, them get the HO cams, from a competitive dealer, ~110 bucks for the pair, install them yourself, and you get alot of low end for the buck. GEt rid of that stupid belt driven fan and clutch, especially with your auto tranny, and you;ll get more low end as well.

Message: You got a suggestion on a cam size/manufacturer/part number that you had luck with? -3.92, 5 speed by the way, not an automatic.
Part 2, If I went with the HO cam and nothing else would that warrant the 3" system? Or would the 2 1/2" still be better?
Thanks.

Message: What you need to do now is get a 3" catalytic converter and all the pipe between your cat-back system and the factory y-pipe. That will get you a lot more power. Then get yourself a computer flash from ASE or Kenne Bell. Then get yourself a larger throttlebody and a good cool air intake. The HO cams are great even if you don't have any of those other pieces, though. But in its current state, your exhaust is killing your bottom end power.

Message: These guys are shooting you straight....
Alex has got his CC running some stout times with the mods he listed.
Of course if you're feeling froggy, you could get a supercharger or nitrous....They make stop light to stop light pretty fun....
"hey what's that whistling noise under your hood?"
"oh that! It's my altenator...It's going bad"

Message: Notch, that's awesome....
Most of the time when the S-10 kids come over to see my truck, they ask "Wha'd you do to it?"
And i'm like "Just a K&N and a Flowmaster!"
And sometimes they actually buy it. Hahahahahah
My alternator.... that's good . Hahahaa
