Subject: Better brakes for 2000 dakota.... IP: Logged
Message: i have a 2000 dakota slt with a v6 and i cant help but notice, the braking really sucks on this truck. is there any upgrades out there? i know i can just get a set of performance pads, but i think the rotors are way undersized. the braking fades like crazy. has anyone ever thought about swaping over the rotors and calipers from a dodge full size? please email me if you have any insight. thanks

Message: Upgrading the rear drums to discs improves braking alot. It also maximizes brake life. Check out my install pics @ www.pbase.com/wiz473
Also do a search for previous post on the subject and you'll see why I upgraded.

Message: I had brake problems with my 00 Dak, warped rotors and overheated front brakes while towing. I solved the problem by adjusting the back brakes by hand, the rear shoes were way too loose. The truck doesn't nose dive while braking anymore, and I haven't overheated the front brakes while towing.
Check out the old post that's something like "Dakota brakes lawsuit". A couple of guys point out that if the back brakes are not functioning properly, the front brakes are doing 100% of the braking.

Message: That's right the rear drums do not work correctly, but when you convert to rear discs you have to adjust the distribution block so that more power is distributed to the rear discs to remove alot of the load from the front discs. You cannot modify it to use for the drums because they do not handle the extra load well.
