Message: I have gotten an extended warrenty for my truck up to 75,000 miles or 7 years, and was wondering what kind of modifications will not void the warrenty. Does this also apply when I have a certified mechanic do the same work such as and exaughst upgrade?

Message: Appolyon,
You can modify your truck all you want, just remember that once a particular part has been altered then most dealers will not warranty the part that has been changed.
Example: Say you put an aftermarket cat-back exhaust and shortly after the cat converter goes bad. The cat is still covered by the warranty. Actually catalystic converters are covered for 80,000 miles, which is longer than your warranty.
Now if you install a supercharger and your engine blows a head gasket, then you probably won't get that fixed under your warranty. Unless your certified mechanic can hook you up. ;)

Message: This goes out to everyone who has checked into their warranty AT ALL, instead of reading simple gossip. I have heard (but don't know where to find information) about this federal law that prohibits the manufacturers from voiding warranties due to aftermarket parts being added. However... I called a warranty person (I don't remember her title) from Chrysler, and she said that any repair that can be attributed to an aftermarket part will void the warranty on everything downstream (so to speak). Example, our trucks are designed to run at certain temperatures with certain mixtures. If we go messing with these predetermined parameters, the dealer can very easily say that a part went bad because the engine was not running as it should. A simpler example- Upsized tires mess with the odometer, which according to this lady, voids the warranty due to the fact the displayed mileage isn't completely accurate. That is why it is critical to get everything recalibrated at a reputable place. She told me an example of some poor dude's warranty that was voided due to towing over the recommended weight limit. The only reason they wouldn't repair his transmission was because the service person noticed an oversized tow hitch. The wear was consistent with overhauling. Now think how visual some mods are under the hood.
My million dollar question is: How large is this grey area where the dealer can say that a needed repair was CAUSED by "that really cool Z-Pipe and Magnaflow/Carsound exhaust that I just had added?"
I figured that a supercharger would probably void a warranty on nearly every part, but I have heard three people (who worked for dealerships) say that even changing the thermostat will void the warranty on most of the internal parts.
Someone please help me sleep at night!

Message: According to the law, the mod must be the direct cause of the problem, and they must prove (not just say) that the part you added is the problem. It's all scare tactics by the warranty folks until you stand your ground. Then they back pedal faster than the French with the Blitzkreig chasing down their necks (no offense intended by the French/German remarks).

Message: I bought a third party warranty throug warranty gold, and I have had no problem with getting stuff fixed. I recently removed my clutch fan and put in a black magic. THe water pump went out about a month later (probably due to me wrenching on the fan). Not a single question was asked. According to the salesperson when I bought the package, aftermarket parts are not covered. So if I put in a supercharger, they won't cover the super, but they will stil cover everything else. I asked that question up front, and got the answer in writing.
Of course, it still depends on what your service person tells the warranty people. If he calls them up and just says the head gasket is blown, and I estimate xyz hours and $$, they willpay every time. If he tells them every little detail, it may cause problems.
Just my $0.02

Message: The guy with the hauling issue should have agrued that an oversized toe hitch has nothing to do with how much is actually being hauled. He should have keep to his guns that load was under specs. Chrysler is not going to sent a guy out to your home with a scale to weigh a trailer. Heck, I know guys that have toe hitches but have never used them once.
Best piece of advice, is get to know your service writers! I've become "chummy" with a few writers at my dealer and they hook me up constantly. It also helps if you have a little "know how" about your vehicles, shows them your not another misinformed customer. Heck, offer to buy them lunch sometime after getting your truck back from service.
