Subject: What's the difference in these? IP: Logged
Message: Intercoolers and aftercoolers, what exactly is the difference.
I always see aftercoolers mentioned only with superchargers, but what is the physical difference between the two (where they're placed in the air path mostly)?
Thanks

Message: Aftercoolers cool the air after it has been compressed by the supercharger. Most 'intercoolers' are actually aftercoolers but people just got to calling them intercoolers... pretty cool huh.

Message: So then would a TRUE intercooler be located where, between the air filter and the supercharger??
And aftercoolers are mounted between the S/C and the throttle body I guess?
Nifty, thanks

Message: Actually it would not make any sense to put an intercooler between the filter and the super/turbo charger. You would want it after the air is compressed
to cool it back down,as one of the main byproducts of compressing air is HEAT so you would want to cool that down before it made it's final journey into each cylinder.

Message: Yeah thats what I thought actually, but if aftercoolers are after the turbine, and intercoolers have just come to be called that, seems they must be found elsewhere, and theres no other place that comes to mind that they would be.
Seems there would be a reason theyre named differently :(

Message: A true intercooler is used on dual stage units (2 compressors) and would be between the 2 of them. This is what I have read and have never seen this kind of setup.

Message: INTERCOOLER : A device used for cooling a liquid
(as air) between successive heat producing processes ie: super/turbo charger and engine
AFTERCOOLER : A device used for cooling a liquid
(as air) after heat producing process ie: air compressor
Hope this helps and answers your question better
