Subject: open air filter ??? IP: Logged
Message: I just temporarily installed my ram-air box and would like anyone's help on this. I am using a 14" round filter with the K&N Extreme top. This adds very noticeable power, but also adds an extreme amount of noise. Will a solid lid quiet the noise considerably, and how much (if any) power will be lost compared to the Extreme lid? There is also a vibration in the cab when on the throttle: will the lid changing help this? As far as power, this thing rocks; but everything else sucks. I would like to use it if at all possible, but would really prefer to cut the noise down substantially. Thanks in advance to all that help.

Message: I never used Extreme top but I have open filter. It is K&N triangle shaped one with solid chromed top. Pretty noisy right after I start it up cold but with radio on, and I don't play it very loud, I can't hear much noise until I get on it. Then, for lack of a better term, it sucks.
Vibration? I don't have no stinking vibration.

Message: I am running with a ram air box on my '97 as well but with a solid lid. I don't find it too loud but that's a subjective call. My only concern with the Extreme top is that it would seem to negate cooler coming into the tb which is the main feature of the ram air box.
I'm using a K&N 14" x 2.83" filter so that the lid is about even with the top of the box. I tape around the edge of the box and the lid to prevent any heated air from the engine bay from getting into the tb.
HTH.

Message: I went from a K&N open element 13" filter to a Ram Air Box 14" with solid top and noticed a drastic decrease in underhood noise. I have no clue how your ram air hood connects to your intake, so it's hard to tell if it would be reasonable to get rid of the open top.

Message: where did yall buy yours? I have a 2001 R/T and i was looking for one but dont know what size to buy. I looked online and i know that I need a 14x3 air element but what size should it be on the bottom to fit over the throttle body? if anyone knows that would be much appreciated. thanks!!!

Message: My error. Ignore my post above. When I read ram air box, I thought that it was a box with dual air ducts running to the front grill. I didn't clue in that it was the type used in conjunction with a ram air hood.

Message: I'm with ticats, I know ram air box stuff, but not the hoods. I can make a pretty good guess that the added noise is because of all the open area of the filters, so you cna hear the air rushing into the throttle body. If the noise bothers you maybe invest in some good underhood insulation like dynomat or some other similar product.
