Subject: What does it take to run13's? IP: Logged
Message: I got a stock 2000 4.7 45RFE unlocked rear diff. running stock tire size. I use the truck for towing, and to get to work.
What does it take as far as cubic dollars and parts to run 13's--with out NOS?
What did you stock truck run in the 1/4?

Message: how much you wanna bet some ford guy will find this thread and say it takes a Lightning to run 13s!!?
w/o NOS, you'll but hard pressed .. forced induction is one sure way... otherwise I bet this set up would get you into the 13s:
KRC206 or 218 cams (not sure when the 218s come out)
Mike Leach Flash (since you have a 2000)
3.92 gears with LSD
Slicks
traction bars
3" exhaust & Cat
HO Manifold (or a custom one)
Cold Air intake
Maybe a TB
Maybe injectors if you start running lean
hopefully you have a regular cab
try reducing the weight a bit, wherever you can
I've heard of a set up similar to that (except HO cams) run 14.66 @ 92.5 mph (Club Cab) .. one run 14.23 @ 93.49 (Regular cab)

Message: Cubic dollars:
Forced induction A: Supercharger kit for $3750 or more.
Forced induction B: Turbo Charger system from scratch.... close $4500 or more.
Naturally Aspirated: Shift kit for the tranny, Gears with limited slip for the axle, Hi-Stall Torque Converter, KRC 218/218 cams, modified intake manifold (shorter runners), true dual 2 1/2" exhausts with headers and custom y-pipe, 70 or 72 mm throttlebody, removed radiator clutch fan, short accessory belt, Leach PCM Flash, Traction devices, Sticky tires, remove some weight (isn't that pretty much what Canucker just said??)
...... $2500 to $3000 or more.
Hmm.......
Looks like about $3000 cubic dollars or more.
If it's a club cab, and it has the 3.92 rear axle ratio, then you may end up spending a little less. But, it doesn't take very much to go 14's.

Message: Oh yeah... two ways to spend cubic dollars:
A. Nitrous Oxide System...... $500 or so.
B. All of that naturally aspirated stuff me & Canucker listed PLUS the forced induction....... $5000 to $6000.

Message: NO2 - $ 500
Supercharger- $3500
Turbo - $4000
Heads , cam , intake , RRs... $2500 +
One of those should do it. If all you care about is a timeslip then the NO2.
Slicks and trq converter are a couple other pieces of the puzzle.
Personally I like the heads, cam & intake deal and then a Vortech SC on top of that. I`m shootin for mid 12s.
This $hit costs way too much $$$. The weight of these Gen III Dakotas really makes it hard to build a fast truck.

Message: Late winter/spring it's 26" slicks on a 15x10 rim, Marty's cams, 72mm TB, and maybe true duals. I am hoping that puts me in low 14s with the mods I have listed and the ones being done right now.
To get 13s without NAAAWWWWZ -- hahaha -- will take a couple grand either way you look at it. Evenentually I would like a Kenne Bell or Vortec, but that's all hopeful wishing. Get one of those and you'll surely go into the 13s.

13's easily!
You could install neon for the few extra ponies needed to cross over into the 12's, and if that doesn't get it you could always go with some NAAAWWWWWWWSSSS.

Message: Weather got cold and I took the tailgate off.
The .66 was run in September with the ambient temps in the 80's & humidity kinda high at night.
The .55 was run in November with the ambient temps in the 60's and bone dry outside. Track was really prepped well, too. Suprised the hell out of me! I had been running with the tail gate up and a soft tonneau cover. No spare tire, obviously, but still the 50 lbs of the tailgate in place. Then I saw Duner's video and decided what the hell.....
I just got my box back from Leach this a.m. from having it reflashed. The A/F ratio was waaay fat from 3500 rpm on up. By the time it reached 5000 rpm, the ratio was 9.0:1 when the target ratio should be 12.5:1 or 12:1 at worst. That's a lot of top end power that I was leaving on the table. Once this ice storm moves out of here, it's back to the dyno. Prolly Friday or next week sometime.......

Message: 9.0:1 ! wholly crap. you're just dumping fuel into the exhaust! .. suprised you didn't wreck your cat actually.
That should be good for another 10 or so hp I'd guess. we'll see what the dyno says though.

Message: Well, to be honest with you, when it hits the 5500 rpm point, the ratio is at a gasoline rain-storm 8.8:1 and I think that may be why the motor wouldn't rev any higher than 5500 rpm.
And the cat (yep, the $225 Carsound 3" cat) is rattling on acceleration and deceleration to the point where the dyno operator thought it was the motor pinging. I said.... naw, that's the exhaust. It only rattles a little cooled off when I hit it with my hand. But I may end up shelling out another chunk to get a NEW cat.... sheesh.
I'm just hoping for some upper rpm power. Right now the dyno curve falls off after 4500 and it's just bogging really badly as you go further up the rpm scale. So hopefully, yes, another 10hp would be nice, but I'd also like to see the hp and torque curves get kinda flatter after 3500 rpm........
Results coming up soon.....

Message: Yeah Alex... Keep us posted.
The thing needed to be put on a diet. Did Leach charge you any extra to do the new program? Did you send him the dyno sheet?
If all goes well, and I get the charger next week, after the install I'm hitting the dyno. If it's showing a fat problem with the fuel, I'll look into Leach for a custom burn. I just want to make sure there isn't a lean problem...
Good info...Keep up the good work. You may have just dropped another .2 especially if it's pulling in the uppers better...

Message: As for Leach's charge, I had already had the box done, and when it came back and wouldn't rev past 5500 rpm under load, I contacted him immediately. That was in July.
I was just now able to send it off because I am always travelling and still needed dyno info and a/f ratios, not to mention fuel pressure readings. Basically I needed to do some leg work to confirm that it wasn't anything mechanically wrong. In the end all I had to pay was shipping both ways, but I think the standard charge is $150 for any custom flash work.
The flash that I had may be absolutely perfect for a centrifugal supercharger, since the higher it revved, the fatter it ran. Starting at 3500 rpm, the a/f went like this:
3500......11.0:1
4500......10.0:1
5000...... 9.8:1
5500...... 8.7:1 (that's where it just wouldn't rev any higher)
If you could force some air in there (boost it in there, if you will) then it would run like a bastard!! Tom Fox labels his flashes with a code. That fat-flash was the "DR" flash. The box has come back to me with a "D3" on the box, so we'll see if that's the trick.
Notch, if anything I might be tempted to leave the timing and fuel alone and just have him remove your speed and rev limiters. You dont' want to have that thing pinging all summer with too much timing....
