Message: I was thinking of purchasing a 180 thermo, when it occured to me it may already have it. I think she is running about 190 but it is kind of hard to tell with the stock gauge.

Message: Your stock thermo is 190. Its that temp for emissions, at 190 the hydrocarbons are less. Optimal performance is 180, and the Robertshaw 180 (Autozone part number GT-755, $5) is also a higher flow. The only drawback is you may have to put the 190 back in for smog check. I plan to go to a 'don't pass-don't pay' station to find out when I'm due in 2005.
If you go to the 180, go to a colder plug, like an Autolite 3923 to take full advantage of the system (oh yeah, this is for a 4.7L, I don't know if any of this applies to the other V-8s).
