Subject: Supercharger detonation ?? IP: Logged
Message: OK if i were to run a simple s/c kit like a powerdyne that uses the vacume/boost controlled FMU...would that mean i could remove the s/c drive belt when going on really long trips so i could run 87 octane without getting ping/detonation problems? I was just thinking about it because i dont think the powerdyne uses a comp flash to change timing etc.

Message: yes, but one problem...
the super charger bolts to the same place the stock belt tencioner does. so if you want to bypass the blower head unit, you will have to take it off... (which is not hard at all. its just 3 bolts)
-Eric Injection is nice, but i'd rather be blown. 5.2L, 5speed. Powerdyne SC, 50mm TB, 2bbl M-1, 1.7RR's, MSD 6BTM, ceramic JBA headers, 3

Message: kota on 20's,...
thank you for your reply...also have you had any problems with powerdynes 5.2 kit? I was looking into them because of their prices i see on various performance sites. But i also see that people have had belt breaking issues with these. I would just like to run the standard 6psi.

Message: the only problem i have had was, i blew up two of the stock airhats. i bought a metal hat from paxton, and now its good.
also, you might want to buy a MSD 6BTM. i bought mine before i put the blower on the truck and im glad i did. on warm days i have to pull a few degrees of timing because of detonation. this will save you headgaskets.
i have not had a problem with the belt, but i dont understand why they made the kit with a 6rib belt? i dont get any slippage on the 6# pulley, but you will if you ever go to a 9#.
in all honesty, if you are going to buy a NEW PD kit, you will probably be better off buying a Vortech SQ kit. it comes with everything you need, and more.
or, if you want to save money, im selling the blower kit and everything you will need to make it run right.

Message: I would like to buy a used one for the lower price but i will be buing a 4.7 litre kit of the powerdyne....i wanted a powerdyne because of the no oil pan tapping. I know Kenne bell makes a twin screw type that has its own oil supply like ati prochargers do but i also wanted a easier install. I heard powerdynes just use a boost sensitive FMU instead of a computer flash so that is another reason why i chose powerdyne.
I dont know much about ignition for newer trucks...i have been looking at msd's website trying to find a retard unit for a coil on plug design like 4.7

Message: none of the blowers for our trucks require a flash to the pcm (one reason is because only 2 people in the world have the code for the pcm). they either use a FMU, or a separate computer to fire the auxilary injectors.

Message: gsmarquis, Don't fear the oil pan tapping. I installed a Vortech on my Dak about a month ago. The oil pan mod was by far the easyist step of the whole instalation. Just follow the instructions exactly and it takes about 3/4 hour with no problems. If you ever want to remove the Vortech (or Paxton), just replace the fitting with a pipe plug from Home Depot (under $1).

Message: What all is involved with the oil pan tapping? is it just a hole punched....followed by a rubber gasket?

Message: i would not buy a supercharger based solely on ease of install.
