Can someone help, just bought my dakota 3 weeks ago(used 99 SLT 5.2 68,000) and at first I was vary pleased with the performance. But about one week ago the check engine light came on and I noticed a slight lack of power, especially at the low end( It used to brake loose off the line) I was wondering if there was a way to run the codes with out having a scanner or taking it to a dealership. If this is possible please help.

that many miles, my out of the blue guess would be your cat(s). but to pull codes up, ignition, off, then all the way on just before it starts, go off and on 3 times rapidly, then hold it to the on position (not start). I could be wrong though.

Ok, I tried the procedure described above with no luck. But I was assuming it used the flash system with the engine light. I dont know if perhaps I was not holding the key in the on or off posistions long enough.

you need to toggle key on and off 3 times. when you do this, do not start the truck. on off on off on off on and leave it on watch your check engine light. turn it like if you were to turn on radio or wipers but don`t need to start it. it will flast like morest code. you should see it flash, at the end the all clear is 55. i think, you should get 5 flashes then a pause and 5 more flashes, to read 55. 25 would be 2flashes and then a pause then 5 more flashes. you get it. some body should have the codes for you on the site, HELP HIM OUT BOYS. it will steer you in the right direction. look for a hayes manual their cheap 15 dollars,(auto zone is where i have seen them) should have codes, and other information so you don`t have to pay a dealer for something you can fix on your own. plus torque specs if you were ever to change something.

The key on/key off sequence does NOT work on the '98-'99 Daks. As many times as it has been posted on this forum you'd think people woudl have learned by now. The only way to pull codes is with a DRB scanner, and my local Autozone still checks codes for free. Reset the computer by removing the negative battery terminal for 30 seconds, then go and drive it again. The check engine light should be gone. If it comes back on then get the codes read. It's the only wya to know what's wrong.

Autozone still checks codes for free in my neighborhood. I have a '99 Dak, 318 and the same thing happened to me about 3 mos back w/46,000 mi on it. Took it to Autozone and they scanned - bad 02 sensor. Replaced both and that took care of it.
