use 87....if it pings DONT TAKE IT TO DEALER!!!! They will give you the ping flash and your 5.9 will be the biggest pig ever. Then try 89. Trust me, 89 is a small price to pay to avoid the ping flashes.

Unfortunately, I have been forced to use Exxon 93 due to pinging. She still pings just a tad while under WOT but nowhere near as bad as when I use 87 or even 89(Octane boost with 93oct still no help at WOT). I know its not good for it to ping at all but I am still under warranty for 35K more miles and I will do what is necessary as to not get that death flash from DC.

Think I will run 87oct for the last 10K miles of my warranty and use WOT quite a bit more. If nothing breaks before the warranty is up....then I will upgrade to a 408 or HEMI.

Also hopeful that the HypertechIII will resolve this as well but I will not hold my breath.

Currently at 65K miles with new plugs/wires/cap/rotor.

I have a 2001 4.7 durango. It ran perfect on 87, until I installed a 360 airintake and HO cams. Since the mods, it pings lightly on 87 @ about 65% throttle and up....so now i run 89 and notice a little smoother performance...however when i tried 93+ it seemed to diminish the smoother running and lost MPG.

87 Octane for me. Sometimes 89 or 91 for long hauls to the desert (usually for caravaning with freinds and we end up racing down the freeway). Never ever heard a ping come from my engine...stock, after 360AirIntakez, nor after Mopar HO Cam/Intake or any mod. No pinging here.

You cannot harm the engine by using higher octane. It just costs more. If you do the math it isn't that much more. If you are almost broke or penny conscious then it might matter.

Use the lowest octane you can without causeing pinging or detonation. Your truck will run better on the lower octane ratings. On my R/T it ran the best on 89 with the Mopar PCM. As far as cost, if you are in an area where the pricer per gallon jumps 10 cents for each upgrade in gas, the cost does make a difference. Might not be much per tank, but in the long run, it adds up.

Math Lesson

For me, I had to fill up at least twice a week. Usually took 17-18 gallons to fill up. So lets say I just jumped up the the next higher octane and it costs 10 cents more per gallon. That at least $1.70 per tank, at two tanks of gas per week, that's $3.40 a week, at 52 weeks in a year, that's $176 a year in added gas costs. And that's assuming the same gas mileage for each octane rating. Seems worht it to run the lower octane to me, especially since my truck got better gas mileage on the cheaper gas. We cna figure that up too. I averaged about 700 miles a week on my truck(yeah I know I drive a lot)Now, I'm just going to use some round number. I averaged about 15mpg on 89 octane. So for 700 miles at 15mpg, that is about 46 gallons in gas. With the 91 octane, I usually got 1mpg less or 14mpg average. At 700 miles, thats 50 gallons of gas, so four extra gallons of gas a week to run the more expensive gas. Lets say I can get 89 octane for $1 a gallon, it's going to cost me $46 a week to drive my truck. So now I jump to 91 octane whihc is $1.10 a week and at 50 gallons a week, that's $55 a week. $9 more per week to drive my truck. 52 weeks in a year and that's at least $468 more a year to drive my truck on the 91 octane rather than the 89 octane.

HSKR,

After reading your last post I see that you have taken the time to justify the cost of gasoline vs. your drivability and so forth.

I have a gasoline program you would be interested in...it give you 21% OFF whatever the pump price is at any station...exxon/shell/mobil/ammaco. etc...all the ones that take a debt. card. If your gas cost 1.50 a gallon you pay 1.18
