Subject: Tune up ?? IP: Logged
Message: I talked to the dealer and i asked how much a tune up was and what was exactly done. And he said about 180 (cdn.) to change the plugs, Change the air filter, and checking the computer? Which i asked further and he said "well to see if any codes pop up" with is a load of Sh*t. because if anything popped up the engine light would come on.
So I told him I am bringing my own Plugs (autolites) and I have a K&N . So basically the only thing that needs to be done is the plugs. And the he said well that would drop the price to about 140 . So basically its going to cost me 140 dollars to get my plugs changed !!!!!! ?
What do you guys think about this? I would rather save my self 140$ and change them myself if i could. Or is anything else done in a tune up?

Message: If your dak is due for it's first tune up, save the $140 and spend it on cap and rotor with brass contacts and if you want new spark plug wires (anything good with a spiral core i.e. MSD, Jacobs). The OEM cap and rotor are aluminum contacts and corrode quickly. This is what I would recommend. The dealer you are paying for labor (maybe an hour?) Hopefully you are pretty much mechanically inclined. The cap and rotor are in the rear of the engine compartment. If you want to remove the cap with the wires just write down the configuration so you know which wires goes where. I found a little tough swaping wires on the caps while back there.

So did you say that it is difficult to do those swaps ? How hard is it to change the plugs? I change my Girlfriends all the time on her little car. but I heard that the plugs on the daks are hard to get at ?

Message: It's not really difficult but there is not alot of room when you are trying to swap the wires on the two caps. I think it might be easier to document the wire and cap configuration, then take off the old cap plus wires. Put on the new wires on the new cap per configuration and place it on the distributor with the new rotor. It's just a room issue.

Message: I just changed mine last night. Dodge recommends Autolite 3924's, but like everyone here says, use the 3923's. They really reduce detonation. All you need is a 5/8 socket and I needed an extension for a couple of them. Also, gap them at 0.035. It should take less than 10 minutes.

Message: and says "jon Dodge does not recommend Autolite plugs, Dodge recommends Champions." Dodge has had a working relationship with Champion Spark Plug since at least the early 1960's Autolite was never, in that time period a supplier to Dodge, but has been part of General Motors for a period dating back many more years then that.

Message: Sorry Dogpisser, I meant that Dodge recommends the heat rated plug of the 3924. I was refering to the part number, not the manufacturer. I know that the stock plugs are Champion, but look up the recommended part # for Autolite. Should be 3924's even though the 3923's work better for detonation. :)
My 96 dak uses a 0.035" gap.

Message: Hi BlkDak,
With all the mods together, it really woke up the 3.9L. I think the best upgrade was the TB, but everything has to work together. Better breathing in and out. I can't burn rubber but there's nice push into the seat. I think I am fininshed with the engine (maybe with the exception of Accel 300+ ignition, sometime in the future. he, he). I like what a lot of people have done in this site ie Lesley, she's done more than I, like injectors and my buddy Swingman, with the hot cam. Sweeeeeeet!!!!
Right now with funds permiting, I am concentrating on handling (sway bars and shocks, and later tires) and trying to working on appearence (a Stillen bumper cover in a few months)

Message: BlkDak,
Invest in a Haynes Repair Manual for your truck, it will helps with pics and step by step instructions.
Changing the plugs is easy with the right tools. Get yourself a socket wrench with a few different size extensions and a swival head. The spark plugs toward the rear of the truck and be a b*tch sometimes.
Sometimes you might not be able to get the plug out with the socket even though the plug is loose. Use the spark plug wire to "grab" the plug and then back it out of the sleeve.
DO NOT unplug all your wires all at once, unless you got it memorized. Draw yourself a quick diagram and do each wire one and a time. This is only needed if you decide to change your spark plug wires (recommended if you haven't). While your changing your wires, you might as well do the cap and rotor (not difficult). Good Luck

Message: BlkDak, the correct spark plug gap can be found on the sticker under the hood. The plugs on the right side (passenger) will be much easier to get at if you remove the stock air box. For the plugs, remove one wire at a time and use dielectric grease in the boot before you reinstall the wire. Don't overtighten the plugs. The correct torque is 30 ft. lbs., a little past snug. If your going to replace the distributor cap (don't forget the rotor), mark the wires one at a time as you remove them. You can use masking tape and a magic marker. #1 terminal is marked on the distributor cap. The fireing order is cast into the intake manifold. Start with #1 wire and go clockwise around the cap marking each wire as you remove it. After you remove and mark all of the wires, remove the old cap and rotor and install the new rotor and new cap and reinstall the wires, as per fireing order, starting with #1.

Message: Hey steve
whats the grease for ? So pretty much... just:
1. take the wire/plugs out 1 at a time
2. gap all the plugs
3. put them in "snug"
4. use the wire to pull them out if they
wont move really.
5. replace stock wires With which brand?
6. " " cap/rotor ? ?
Any other tips that i might be missing ? for a first time change? so i dont mess anything up!
I heard something about the washers on the plugs come w/ another set ? they go face down?
Also the grease ?
Thanx alot guys.... this info will help me a ton.

Message: The dieletric greese is so the plug wire "boot" doesn't get stuck to the plug, and will come off easyer later. Also be warned it this is the first tune up, the factory puts the plugs in ridiculously tight.
Cap/rotor- borg warrner
Wires- borg warrner, good wire and not alot of money, used alot in NASCAR
MSD, JBA, Ect.
Plug gap is listed on the sticker under the hood. Hope this helps.

Message: BlkDak,
Start by assembling the individual plug parts. Then gap all the plugs to specs. Takes a few minutes and saves time if one happens to be damaged. Just do one plug and wire at a time so that you don't put the wrong wire to the wrong plug. Borg Warner is a good brand, which I recommend. Expect a few of the stock plugs to be really tight. Draw yourself a diagram to help remember the correct firing order if you happen to unplug one too many. You'll do fine.

Message: No matter what plug you purchase set the gap according to what the manufacturer says. The gap may have been different on older models and sometimes it can vary if you have a high performance truck versus a work truck. I know you are anxious, but it is good to read things for yourself and then ask questions. Opinions are like butt holes, everyone has one.

The 1 plug on the passenger side far back. Was a bastard to get out of there... there rest were reasonably fine. but i managed to take a nice chunk out of my skin in the process.
As for the Rotor and Cap .. I didnt get to do it cause Rain/Dark out .. But how exacty to you get at it ? ? Seeing as its at the very back behind the airhat ?
