Subject: Powerdyne info for 4.7's IP: Logged
Message: I sent an e-mail to the guys over at Powerdyne this week to inquire about the new kit they are coming out with. Tried to pry as much info as I could, but they didn't budge on the release date or price...
Here's the mail:
Jason,
I really don't have information for you yet. I hope to have the kit
released prior to the first of the year. I can tell you that our price will be
very competitive to the Paxton, as they are more of a competitor than Kenne
Bell. (Different type of supercharger all together). However, I can tell you
that the "butt dyno" tells you to hold on!

Message: I talked with Powerdyne a year ago and they claimed it would be out in a month or two last year. They were suppose to have it at the SEMA show last year. That was then and they still don't have anything now.

Message: I'll be getting a kit in December, and I have been doing research on all of the kits out there..
Kenne Bell kits: Roots style charger, good for low and mid-range power, typical install time for a skilled mech...10 hours. Must send in your computer for a flash. COST, $3,800-$4,200. Good feedback and bad from owners. Full boost at 2-2,500rpm, install pretty straight forward, although kind of complicated...Downside...Upgrades are pretty much a no-no. COST!...People with auto trannies have had problems with the transmission shifting correctly. Have to send computer in.
Paxton Kits... No feedback from owners yet. Talking to techs is my only form of info. Did a lot of reading on the Mustang forums, inquiring on their satisfaction with the NOVI-1000 kits. For the most part they are happy, but most are upgrading to the NOVI-2000 blower. (more PSI) Greedy suckers... The NOVI-1000 flows 6-7psi in stock form, but by changing the crank pulley out for a larger one, and using a smaller blower pulley these guys are getting anywhere from 10-13psi.. They are happy with the results in the seat of the pants....Only downside I've seen are problems with blower-to-crank belt popping off or slipping. Overall good blower from what I've seen.
COST....$3,750-$4,000
Powerdyne....Yeah Yeah Yeah internal belt problems, internal bearing problems. KRC has stopped the sales due to all of the problems. I have a good friend that installs Powerdynes at a dealer. His feedback from customers was good. Now I'm not saying that they haven't had problems, so don't flame. After checking the posts from people who own the blowers over at DTO, they are happy with the performance of their kits on the 318/360's. I did find people with problems on the mustangs. They mostly had problems with the internal belts, and some with bearing problems. The guys with belt problems have installed Kevlar belts, that have stopped the problems.
The thing about Powerdyne, is the fact that their kits normally run a good bit cheaper than the competition, they are easier to install, and you have no oil lines, or resevoirs to change the oil.
Good / Bad blower???? Don't know haven't ever had one.
I'm just doing my homework and sharing, I will probably end up with the Paxton, due to personal interest. I like the fact that it is easily upgradeable, and has been proven to be a good blower in other vehicles.
If I can find one for $3,500 or less, I'll jump on it. If I had the money right now, I could get it for that. Paxton is offering a nice rebate right now through November 13th. Too bad I don't have all the funds yet!!!

Message: On powerdynes unit you can upgrade to a gear driven charger, but then you are back to oil lines and added price. Its a toss up. You should also look into www.speedtweaks.net turbo system.

I hate it when that happens.
I'm still leaning towards the Kenne Bell personally. I've heard that upgrades are a no no, but what upgrades are we talking about here??

Message: What we're talking about is that if you deviate from stock in the slightest way, Jim Bell starts getting very sketchy about cutomer support or even warranty issues. Several people have inquired about running the KB with HO cams and other mods and all they get is a brick wall. No help, and actual reccommendations AGAINST running the cams, intake, headers, anything.
The other problems that I've seen are in the SpeedFreaks forum on www.jeepsunlimited.com where several 4.7 guys have had catastrophic engine failures due to the KB. Apparently the problem is the part-throttle boost situation. Because the blower is able to produce boost down so low, the computer is still in closed loop when it kicks in. The result is that the computer can't handle it and the Boost-A-Pump isn't strong enough to help it out.......

Thanks for catching that, yeah that seems pretty funny. I hate it when they shift correctly too...
"incorrectly"
I read that post ALEX, and yeah that guy had major problems, but I think he was trying to turn his Jeep into a PRO-MOD...hehe
From what I've heard from signman, glen or bill they are extremely satisfied. My buddy has one on his 96 Mystic Cobra, also a few bolt-ons and the thing runs 12.20's on street tires. He upped the boost from 8psi-10psi, and shot a piston out so hard it cracked the block. He rebuilt with SHM block and forged everything. He loves the blower, but said he wishes he wouldn't have gotten greedy with the boost. He also had it dyno tuned right after install. He had to have another chip burned to take out some of the timing. Kenne Bells program was very aggressive on the timing causing a bad air/fuel mixture leaning out on the top-end.
He has had many talks with Jim Bell and feels like they have good customer service.
GSMARQUIS....I don't believe I could handle dishing out $4,500 for Speedtweaks turbo unit. Plus the fact that they are half-way across the country would suck... I definitely wouldn't want to install it. (and price is an issue for me) I have deep pockets, but they have holes in them.

Message: Yeah, I've heard a few horror stories from those Jeep guys too. However, no one here or on the Ram sites have had any problems and those are the only people that I've seen with any problems. It bothers me, but not enough to believe it'll destory my engine (hope that statement doesn't bite me in the ass later).
My plans:
Kenne Bell sometime next year w/ 71/71mm TB
4.56s (soon)
slicks on 15x10 rims (next spring, it's winter now, who cares about slicks!
hurst short shifter (soon)
HO or EHO, or KRC cams (next summer)
I might be delaying the Kenne Bell a bit so I can buy a 95 240sx, but I havn't made up my mind.
Kenne Bell w/ 6psi of boost, is more than enough power for an agerage DD street truck, heh.
Go lil ole 4.7, go!

Message: Sounds like a plan, man.
First gear 3:92's vvvvrrrrrrooooommmm, shift
First gear 4:56's vvrromm, shift
With 4:56's I imagine with the 5-speed, you could take off in third, and lay a patch doing it.
6-psi of Kenne Bell boost...I don't recommend 4:56's you may find yourself losing the peak numbers when the rpm drops after shipping.(dropping much higher) Actually I've thought about this...It may even prove to be more beneficial with the KB unit to run a 3:55 gear, because of the flat torque curve. You'd get good mileage too. (If you could ever keep your foot out of it.)Although you would more than likely cross the 1/4 in 3rd gear or just shift into 4th.
Just something to think about.
After the charger goes on, and time goes by, I'm sure companies like KRC will have new cams.(good blower cams) Different intakes, and heads..
I just want to see how low I can get E.T. wise with a STOCK motor, no accessories removed, with a basic bolt-on S/C.
Then I'll do the other mods.
The truck runs 14.8 @ 91mph now...After charger, I'm hoping 13.4-13.5's @ 99-101mph
I wish some other folks would hurry up and slap a Paxton on, so I don't have to be a test mule.
I may still end up with a Powerdyne???? I'm in the same boat with GSMarquis$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$
I'm hoping they will throw some extra on our December bonuses at work, so I can just get the Paxton.
Waiting SUX...
