Subject: 4WD Gears? IP: Logged
Message: To some of you this may seem like a really dumb question, but I like to live by the saying, "There's no dumb questions, just dumb answers"
So...That being said, Can I change the rear-end gears in my 4WD, or must the front gears be changed too? I'm really not sure how everything matches up, but it seems to me that I would have to change both.
I currently have the 3.55's, is switching to the 4.10's something that I can do? If so, what all is required?
Thanks for the help!

Message: You would have to change both to use the 4wd if its a part time system. I wouldn't try doing it your self because you need to set the gear mesh right or you'll have problems(noise, vibrations, shortened life of the gears).

Message: Power Hungry is exactly right. Both front and rear would need to be changed.
I did a gear swap in April...okay, I paid a shop to do it for me. There are gears available from a number of places...I got mine from Randy's Ring & Pinion (www.ring-pinion.com). Find a shop you can trust...probably the single most important part of a gear swap is finding a good shop to do the install. It is expensive but I'm really glad I did it. With the larger tires I got after the lift, the truck just felt a little sluggish. The tires I put on are about 5% larger in diameter than stock, and the gears I had installed are 10% lower than stock, so I ended up with 5% overall lower gearing. Perfect for what I need & want.
