If I change my stock coil on my 2002 R/T to MSD's direct replacement #8228, will it burn up my plugs and cap every 5,000 miles ?

No, the coil is an OEM replacement. You only run the risk of burnt caps/rotors with the electronic ignition modules...

Plus you'd have to find some sort of an adapter for the connector...I've already bought it and tried to hook it up and the connectors are all wrong. That pin number is for like 91's-96's I believe. So as far as taking it outta the box and plugging it in, no it won't work.

MikeD, thanks for clearing that up for us. I'd looked at this coil and thought about buying it for my 2002 Sport +, but hesitated because of the 91-96 model year listing, even though in the pic it looked just like my OEM coil...now I know!...P

I also have made the same mistake! Summit told me that you did not need to have an addaptor. I have been thinking about two solutions:

(A) accel makes an addaptor for there replacement coil for dodge. I believe that this will convert the '96 down coil to the '97 up harness. any thoughts??

(B) go to the bone yard and find a '96 down Dodge and cut the wiring harness from it and splice it to my own '98 wiring.

What do you all think??

Thanks,
Nathaniel

If Accel makes an adapter, I'd definitely go that route. Otherwise, it shouldn't be any big deal to cut a plug off of a junker and splice it onto your existing wiring, as long as you do it correctly and neatly. I'm just not sure that the potential advantages of a new OEM replacement coil would warrant going through the trouble of doing it.

You will need the Accel adapter used for the accel coil. The MSD uses the same type of plug. Check out speedtweaks.
It's $25.
