Subject: Lets see some 408 Stroker R/T'S!
IP: Logged

Message:
Hey everyone, I'm actually thinking of buying a 408 stroker kit for my almost stock 2001 R/T 5.9. Anyone have any pictures or sites I can hit besides speedtweaks for info. Also I would like to see where are all of the 408 strokers on this site that are hiding post your pics. Thanks

I was gonna say something but I would have been talking about dakotart1's truck. And his numbers are exact and I only had the time. Bye the way, Congrats on breaking the 13 second barrier. The truck has had it in her all summer just wouldn't find the conditions for drag racing.

You could go over to www.dragtruk.com and look up the following:

Damon Blumenstein
Scott Quaranta
Tim Cochran

That's just a smattering of the 408 boys in the crowd. And of course, don't forget Ronnie Williams from above in this same post (I think he may have been the first one to do this little "stretch your 360" trick but I could be wrong) .....

From what I was told they were the first to to go with a 408 or at least to do it to the extent that they did.

dakotart1's is all motor and he's got a drop on it. I'm not sure which one. He had tried traction bars but found them to be a waste of time. He does go to slicks on the rear and older GenII wheels in front for the strip. I'm not sure about specifics on the drop though and any specifics on the rear end. It's also C-notched I believe.

Zach is correct on what he has said and the truck is all motor. I will add that we went from MT ET's (26X10.5X15) to Hoosier Quick Time Pros (28X11.5X15) The MT's we had to do a big burnout to get them sticky enough to hook up. The Hoosier's we just have to haze and they get really sticky. We have Black American Racing Wheels (Wagon Wheels) and had them widened to 10". We have the old type Dakota wheels with used tires on the front when we drag race. The R/T wheels are so heavy and doing this took 60lbs. off the front of the truck. We have a 2/4 drop using the Western Chassis drop. Widening the Rims and the Hoosier's plus taking the clutch fan off put us down in the 12's. I might add that we are using a Delphi Electronics Computer System(Currently the only one and available only from Jon Davis) to run our Fuel Management System. The other guys are running the Fast System or Split Second Box to run theirs. I don't want Nitrous or Blower on the truck because it is a daily driver and don't want a Roll Bar or Cage in it. The truck has over 11,000 miles on the motor and the only thing that has been done to it is change the oil.

Why is an extra tuning device needed to tune the 408 ? Cant you just run bigger injectors and a MP PCM ?
I am interested in going 408 but it sounds like a headache to get it to run.

-thx

depends on the cam i beleve. most people who do a 408 swap, usually get pretty agressive with the cam, and need a way of controlling the fuel.

again, thins is what i THINK...

Injection is nice, but i'd rather be blown.

The Mopar PCM will not by itself run the 408. If you go to a 408 you will have Fuel Management issues, that is the reason you need to go to someone who really knows what they are doing. There are guys that have built their own 408's and they may run quick times but they are always having problems with one thing or another. Yes you would want to go to a bigger cam. We are running 30lb. injectors, a the Delphi Computer System and have know Fuel problems. If you want a really good running 408 then contact Jon Davis at 1-765-348-4386. Keep in mind it will cost some bucks for one, but speed doesn't come cheap.

This is Ronnie. Ryan is busy as Purdue and doesn't have much time to surf the boards. big_torque, I am sure Jon could work something out with you. What I did was leave the truck with Jon just before Thanksgiving and went and got it in late April. I had Jon pull the motor and I paid him as I got the money and he would do more to the truck until it was paid for and done then I picked it up. Indiana doesn't have an emission law, but the cat was run over and is missing now, so I doubt it would pass. If the cat hadn't died I am sure I would have no problem passing it. Slammed00RT, I would be more than glad to let you take it down the track. If you make it to Indiana (East Central) next year, drop me an email and we will arrange it for you.

Well I have over 11,000 miles on the motor and haven't had to do anything to it except change oil. The biggest problem with driveability is trying to keep your foot out of it, other than that no problems. Before we put the 456 gears in it, I got 18 MPG. I drove it to Nashville, TN back in Sept. and averaged 16.7 MPG with the 456 gears in. Driving around locally, I really couldn't give you an answer because of what I said earlier. Sorry!

Nice thanks for the sites and info guys. I'm going to do this as soon as I get the money, question though... what would be a better route investing in a supercharger or going with a stroker kit?

Bump.

Yes I have the same dilemma. 408 or SCed 360. I wanna get into the 12s but also have to worry about passing emissions. NOS is a pretty much a "track only" mod to me.
