Subject: HO Cams and Drivability... IP: Logged
Message: 'Drivability'-what the hell is that anyway?
After my HO cams, I can tell a slight increase in low end torque, which I guess makes it more 'drivable'. 'Drivability'- that seems to be what manufacturers spokmen say when they have no favorable dyno #'s.

Message: In my experience the HO cams greatly improved drivability by moving the torque curve lower in the RPM range. I call this a bonus.

229.4 hp @ 4400
301.7 lb-ft at 3400
With HO cams, HO intake, home proted 68mm tb, short belt, K&n Home brew, gibson catback, 75k miles 2wd 5speed, relocate IAT, that's about it...
and the CAMS made a HUGE difference...

Dynos have been posted! Not mine, I don't dyno my QC, just use the things that work for others.
It was more than a slight increase, but the dyno #'s posted say something like 15ish HP, thruout the band. NOtice, yes, snap your head back, no.
If you want more from just the cam swap, definitely go with regrind, or others such as the one from one of the aftermarket dealers.
This cam is a very mild difference than the stock 4.7 cam. It's still a stock cam! For $122 (for both cams, total) shipped to my door, hard to beat!
Good luck with your mods, again, this is a mild stock cam. The added low end is really nice!

The HP was around 221 without the short belt so not much different... Next eyar I am planning to open the intake and exhaist a little more, I know there is more power to be had...

Message: To me, driveability = reliability.
I would say that these HO cams (which I hope to have soon) are performance enhancers.
The 4.7 straight from the factory is a great engine and has great driveability. It starts in the cold weather, hot weather, and never gives any problems and gets decent mileage. What else can we ask for?
So to me that describes good driveability, an engine that does what it is supposed to.
Poor driveability is the following:
Difficulties starting in any weather
Rough idling
Inconsistent power curve (unpredictable)
Any minor or major problem (things which are not supposed to happen that happen)
I used to have a 73’ Road Runner with a 383, hot cam, heads, 4 barrel, it was fast and sweet but had poor driveability. Always needed to adjust the timing for weather, and type of gas and I could never rely on it for an emergency (no piece of mind). Same with my 95’ Mustang with heads, headers, and timing, but once I installed an ignition module it all went away and it had great driveability/reliability.
I would call the increase in low-end torque (however small it may be) a performance upgrade not an increase in driveability, as the 4.7 bone stock is perfectly drivable/reliable.

"drivability" = smoothness of idle and throttle response.
"reliability" = starts every time and never leaves you stranded on the side of the road.

Message: Gee... it used to be that "driveability" meant you could CONTROL it on the street.
EXAMPLES OF POOR DRIVABILITY:
The power on the 'ol HEMI came on so strong that it was IMPOSSIBLE to keep the rear wheels from spinning uncontrolably. The IDLE was so 'lumpy' that it was hard to keep running under some conditions (Try driving a HemiCuda ;-)
My friends turbocharged 2.2L shadow (320HP at the front wheels) is almost the same.... when the turbo spools-up the power comes on VERY heavy and fries the tires.
POOR DRIVABILITY.... BUT GOBS OF FUN!!

Message: When I got my Mike Leach "flash" the shop manager stated that this mod would improve drivability. Since I asked Leach to give me more low-end torque and re-set my speed limiter program (and this is what he did) I assumed that this is what drivability meant.
I also installed my HO cams two weeks ago and notice better low-end throttle response.
Drivability to me is more power below 3000rpm's since this is the range where I do most of my driving.
