Message: Does anybody know where one could find a sound clip of a Magnaflow exhaust/muffler? I suspect that they might be close to the Dynomax Ultra-Flow mufflers, but would like to hear one before buying one. Thanks.

Message: Demon Dakota - You are the first person to notice and ask why. There are a couple of reasons why I picked that name:
1) I spent quite a bit of time working antiship missile defense in a past life. This was one threat got a lot of my attention.
2) It is a fairly unique name that nobody else was using.

Message: I picked up on the Exocet moniker...I became aware of it after the infamous Iraqi strike on one of our ships back in the 80's, when we were allegedly "friends" with the Iraqis...can't remember the name of the ship offhand. The Exocet is a French-made missile, right? A pretty decent one, too, I guess.
What engine are you looking to put the Magnaflow on? I've got a stainless Magnaflow #14256 on my 3.9...the muffler is a work of art, but it sounds like crap. I'm sure that it'd be awesome on a V8, though. I found a couple of clips on the internet of a Magnaflow on a Chevy V6, and they sounded a WHOLE lot better than the way it sounds on my Dak. I keep telling myself that maybe I'll learn to like it, but I just dislike it more every day. It sounds more like a ricer than most ricers. I emailed Magnaflow to ask them about it, and they told me that V6's just flat out aren't going to sound like V8's, which is probably true. I told them that I was also considering an Ultra Flo, and they said that Dynomax uses a roving fiberglass pack that hardens with heat and loses its sound absorption qualities, which makes the sound more shrill as the muffler ages. Magnaflow's pack is a stainless steel material. The muffler itself is a museum piece, but I just don't like the sound. I may swap it out with a Dynomax Super Turbo to get it back to a quieter, less ricey tone...hopefully. Of course, if you own a V8, you can disregard the last 2 minutes spent reading this post ;-)...P

Message: Just an FYI...I may be wanting to sell my stainless Magnaflow...2 1/2" in/out, center/offset, 18" long body, if I switch back to a Super Turbo or something. I paid $123 for it off the internet, with shipping...I'd probably sell it for $70, which would include shipping. It's only been on the truck for about 250 miles so far, hasn't even been wet. Post a reply if you're interested...P

Message: Pistolaro... Why are you interested in replacing your MagnaFlow with a DynoMax Super Turbo? I am considering just the opposite. I have a Super Turbo on my 97 5.2, which was fine until I installed the headers. Now it's a little loud at 2000 rpm and over. Plus, I'm going to be swapping in a set of 3.90 gears soon, so that 2000 rpm will come up at a lower speed. I was hoping that the MagnaFlow would be a bit less noisy on the highway.

Message: Routesixtysixer, I did a lot of research on mufflers before I decided to buy the Magnaflow. I wanted a quality, well built muffler that would actually stand a chance at adding to the performance of my V6, and that would maybe sound good, too. I'm convinced that the Magnaflow is that muffler, except for the sound. I actually wasn't real concerned with the sound, but, since I've installed it, I just plain don't like the way it sounds on a V6. I'm sure that on a V8, like a 4.7, 5.2 or a 5.9, it'd sound really great. It's a straight through design, and I'd bet that it would really enhance the sound of a V8. This is one reason why I wish that I had a V8 now...so I could enjoy listening to it. On my V6, though, it's much too ricer sounding for my tastes. I don't know if there's a muffler out there that can simulate the V8 sound in a V6. I'm not interested in a Flowmaster...I don't like their design, and I think they're poorly made. If there's not, I'd prefer having no sound, or very little sound at all. I've heard that the Super Turbo is fairly quiet, while still performing better than stock, which is why I was interested in changing to one of those. DakotaDan has a Super Turbo on his V6 truck, and he says that it has a nice, low rumble...not too loud. Of course, folks are different, so what he likes, I might hate, and vice versa. Anyway, I'm trying to come up with options for my V6, but, since you have a 5.2 V8, I don't think that there'd be a problem for you. I don't think that you'd find the Magnaflow particularly quiet, though...it'd probably be at least as loud as your Super Turbo.

Message: Wrong-O, Rob C. The Iraqis have French-made air launched Exocet anti-ship missiles, one of which struck the USS Stark in 1987, during the Iran-Iraq war.
The Exocet was also used by the Argentinean Navy, against the British destroyer Sheffield, during the Falklands war.
The Silkworm is an anti-ship missile of Chinese manufacture. It is not a copy of the Exocet, as it is larger, carries a larger payload, and in some variants, is also supersonic.
The USS Missouri targeted and destroyed several Iraqi Silkworm batteries with its sixteen-inch guns during the Gulf war. During the attack, the Iraqis launched a Silkworm at the Missouri. The missile was engaged and destroyed by the anti-missile battery of the British destroyer Gloucester (which, coincidentally, is a sister ship of the Sheffield!).
Damn, we're hijacking this thread!

Message: Fubar512 is correct. The USS Stark was struck by 2 Iraqi air launched Exocet missiles. If I remember correctly, only one of the warheads actually detonated. The unburned missile fuel and resulting fires caused most of the damage.
The Chinese Silkworm is the Chinese version of the Russian designed Styx (SS-N-2). It is much larger and less sophisticated than the Exocet. The Chinese do have newer missiles which are similar to the Exocet.
I spent some time after the Gulf War looking at the Iraqi Silkworm launch against the Missouri and Gloucester. There was also a US FFG-7 class frigate there are well, but I can't remember its name. I got to spend an afternoon with the CO of the Gloucester discussing the engagement. It was great to walk on board and after being greeted by the CO, he asks you if you want a beer! There were two taps right in the wardroom. It was nice to have a pint of Bass Ale while discussing things.

Getting back to the subject at hand, I've found that on a given engine, all mufflers "sound alike", with the difference being in volume (i.e., one muffler being more effective at eliminating low frequency resonance then another).
Tailpipe length, and where the tailpipe exits in relation to your ear also play an important role. One brand of muffler/exhaust system will be quieter on a CC, then on an RC, and so on. So, if you're asking how a particular muffler sounds at "the driver's ear" that's pretty subjective..
For instance, I have a Gisbon Swept Side catback on my 5.2 CC, and I find it "mellow", yet some find it a bit loud.

Message: Ahh, yes...the Stark. I had no idea that the Iraqis had fired a Silkworm at the Missouri, and that the Gloucester had destroyed it. I guess that this is another instance where we can thank the Brits for watching our back. Thanks for sharing this info...it's cool to talk to folks who were there...P

Message: Thanks to all the vets here who have our country. Just a word about flow master, I have 2 dak's 92 5.2 4x4 and 97 4x2 3.9, I have the 70 series on both. I certainly had people notice the 5.2 after the 70 series was installed. The 3.9 with the 70 series has a deep rich mellow sound. I have been happy with both so far.
