Subject: Pirelli Scorpians in the rain? IP: Logged
Message: I'm getting a new set of tires for my '01 sport w/the 16X8 rims. I have officially roasted the stockers off.
.....which is the primary reason I hydroplaned on the hwy. last weekend after a truck 'tapped' me in the rain,,and spun into the median. (Get the truck back next week hopefully!)
...After the wreck I'm FAR more conscious of wet weather performance from a tire. For those of you riding on them, how do you like them in the rain? Handle well?
Also I'm getting a set mounted and balanced (widest that would fit on those rims) for about $550, does that sound fair?
Thanks,

Message: I have the Scorpions on my Blazer (had em on my old Dak before I got the new one with 16 in wheels, old ones were 15). I love em. I got great traction, unless you hammered it.

So they handle pretty well in the rain then?

Message: Mine seemed to. You'll always have some spin since there's no weight in the back. But they handled really well for me. I'll be getting some as soon as these stock Goodyears are trashed.
I had mine "siped" - angled cuts in the treads. I don't know if that made a difference, or if the tire shop just tries to make an extra buck.
Anyway, I love em, and will probably always use em as long as i have a truck.

Message: Go to tirerack.com and check out the ratings on the tire. It'll tell you what the traction is like in the rain, and they'll also have consumer opinions posted for you to read.

Message: ZenDak 5 days after I got my truck I hydroplaned and did abut a 720 (two full times around, at least) into the grass median, which was flooded.
Looks like you're my shadow now :)
Mine was gone for a week, all kinds of electrical and cooling problems

Message: I have the 255/50/17's and I love them on Dry pavement, but wet I would not say they are the best. I am currently putting 242 RWHP to the ground, and I barely touch the gas and wooohhhhh!
Just my Experience, and for the price. I would look around a lot.

Message: Frog, he probably don't care as much about off the line traction, but how well they handle the rain soaked roads at highway speeds. I drove through a text book midwest thunderstorm in my R/T with the Scorpions(275/50/17) at 80mph with lots of water on the road and never even felt a hint of hydroplaning. Not sure what size the stock tire is on the 16x8 rims, but have you looked at the Bridgestone Potenza RE730 Gen. 2. Of all the online reveiws I have read, they always get high marks for wet weather traction, and they are fairly in expensive. They aren't a truck tire though, so don't know how well they woudl work if you ever needed to tow anything because they don't have the load rating to support towing.

Message: Hey everyone, thanks for the info. I figure a truck is a truck,,it's gonna be beast in the rain no matter what.
As for the size of the tire. I don't know. I never really learned how size tires - I'm not an idiot, just put my interests in other places - wine, women, and music :)
I'll be walking in to discount tire when I get my truck back ($5,500 in damage!), and having them put on a set of the widest Scorpions that will fit those rims. Guy said it would be like $550 total. I really wish I had made this investment two weeks ago!
FYI - If you ever get the chance to see "JackAss" live,,,don't. It sucks ass. They were fourty minutes late,,and did like 4 sorry ass stunts. (My girlfriend dragged me - she's the entertainment editor for her college paper).

Message: DMSDAK,
The size your looking for is 275/60-16 V Rated to 150 MPH (Pirelli Scorpions). Toyo Proxes also come in that size and same speed rating.

Message: I have had Pirelli Scorpion Zeros on my Dak for a year now. They are amazing in the wet (and dry). Here, in the Seattle area, we get rain squalls - deluges that flood the best-drained freeways; I can blast through the freeway rivers without having to crawl; my 2WD truck just tracks through them.
Forget driving them in snow, they suck big time - I had to chain up in a gently-sloped parking lot just to get around - and the fronts pushed so much, I ended up having to go into reverse just to steer around!
This year, I'm doing the smart thing - getting a set of proper winter tires mounted on steel wheels (black ones, of course - don't want to look like a dork with naked silver steel wheels).
The P-Scorpion Zeros are a little noisy, but not objectionable; you can feel & hear the fronts when cooking around onramps and corners.
I snuck in a little track time (just a few warm laps) this summer; they felt very good - predictable and grippy.
Yes, I will get another set when the time comes; they are wearing well.

Message: Pirelli Scorpion Zero is the truck tire - Pirelli tires are renowned for superior wet traction. I forgot to mention, I also pull a 3,000-lb camping trailer and they feel good and stable.
Size: 255/60x15 for my stock wheels - a perfect fit.

Message: I have the 255\55\r16 pirelli scorpion zeros on my quadcab, and I have to say it made all the difference in the world in the handling department, and the wet traction is great except for the fact it is extremely easy to spin the tires at low speed. They are however ten times better than the stock tires overall. Great looks too!

Message: I've had Scorpions on a previous AWD car and they were an excellent tire. I'm currently running Nitto 450's, 275/50/17 which have performed very well in the rain. We just had some early wet snow and they didn't do so well in that. Too wide probably. I've got Blizziak Winter Duelers mounted up on the stock wheels, 235/70/15 ready to go on once the weather stays cold. The Nitto's were $134 each with free shipping at DiscountTireDirect.com

Message: Thanks for all the info guys. So the concensus would be what size for the best looking tire on my 16x8 rim (my truck's lowered 2/2)?
Would going as wide as possible actually start to hurt the wet weather performance?
