Subject: Rearend ring/pinion swap => Difficult? IP: Logged
Message: I know that swapping ring/pinions is a sort of art at times to get it so it doesn't whine, but how hard is it exactly? Installing them on the Dakota in particular. If I were to have a shop install 4.11s or 4.56s, I would buy the parts, how much would it cost on average?
Thanks.

Message: Im not sure how hard it is but i asked a local shop how much it would cost for just the labor and if i remember correctly he said $300. That seems like a rip to me so i'm gonna do it myself with some friends that have more experience with that kind of install. He charges 250 for mustangs and F-bodys. He said that he had not installed one on a dodge before so he was gonna charge more. Maybe its for the better.

Message: That's not bad then. I called Randy's after I posted this message and asked them. They said it would run me, on average, maybe 300-350 for just labour. I say to hell with that. I am able bodied. I will learn.

Message: My advice is to buy new pinion bearings as you will probably kill it getting the pinion depth shim out from under it. Keep the original shim don't try and second guess it or you will be asking for a whine. Keep the side bearings intact. Borrow the tool for doing the side bearing preload.

Yeah, the guy mentioned I would probably want to get new bearings. Thanks for the tips CW. I guess I'll give it a shot and see how it goes.

Message: I tried setting one up before - I bought all the tools and set it up by the book, wear pattern was right and everything. The first time I tried launching I stripped outside off all the teeth on the ring gear.
Take a look around at rear end shops in you're area and you can find somebody to do it cheaper than $300. The rear end shop I go to will set it up for $100 if you buy the parts from them , which actually ends up being $150 compared to what you can buy gears and a sure grip for mail order.

Message: The hardest part is setting the pinion gear.I hope you have a air gun without it the nut on the pinion shaft is a bitch to do. Go to northern tool.com and get a dial indicator or borrow one cheap one is $89.00 to set the back lash. get a new crush collar and pinion seal and bearings.Have a shop or auto part store press it on Give the race a good look i just did mine with 45,000 miles and they were spent dodge has had problems with bearings. Get some white touch up paint to mark the ring gear. if the gears are new the back lash is on the ring gear in thousands meaning .008 go with 4.56s because 3.92s to 4.10s = waste of time.as far as whine goes when you are coasting your going to get a whine but it's not bad or loud.Dodge has large adgustment nuts not shims on both sides of the carrier seting these nut's is a pain in the ass use bearing grease to hold them in till you put the caps back on. Use good gear oil i like mobil 1. when your done let the gears go through 2 or 3 warm up cycles dont beat on them till you break them in genrally 50 miles or so. Take your time and you can probably do it. Most guys think it's hard to do but if you know how to turn a wrench and read a dial indicator and again take you time with a buddy i would give it a shot. BTW i have a 97 R/T and used richmond gears from truck performance.com. With 4.56 gears i get alot of wheel hop so you might want to consider traction bars later.

Message: I just bought a set of 3.90 gears and checked around to see what install cost would be. Three different places quoted me $175 labor. One guy that came highly recommended told me to buy an "install kit" and that would take care of everything except the oil. 4wheelparts has the 8.25 install kit for $106 shipped. I figure to get out for around $300-$325 total (including the install kit cost). BTW, I'm in the Oklahoma City area.

Message: Awesome post fxstc! Thank you very much.
I'm not too worried about whine. It'll have to compete with my exhaust ;)
I have Red Line 75W90 ready to go in there.
Actually, it would be neat to get wheel hop again. I solved my wheel hop on my 3.92s with the Hotchkis and Roadmaster, but if I get some more I wouldn't doubt it. Just means I have a new challenge.
I've heard a lot of problems about the Richmonds online. How long have you had yours in? It seems I see more posts on a problem with theirs, but could it also be because Summit sells them and they are more common.
I'm gunna go for it. Shade tree install. If I run into any problems I'll ask my dad or a mechanic friend for advice. Although I know my dad's response already "And.. what's wrong with your current gears?"

Message: I have around 15,000 hard miles i got a lead foot. I think alot of the problems you here about are from poor installations not so much the gears. also richmond gears has videos on installations again its not brain surgery take your time check every thing twice. I think the gears are good but that's me.

This is the kind of stuff i hear from my dad and grandfather every time i wanna do something to my truck. They are of the opinion that Stock OEM is the only way to go and anything aftermarket is a waste. My Grandfather used to buy old corvettes that were all supped up only to take everything off and put OEM stuff back on them. BAHHH
I feel you pain,

Message: xplikt,
my brother put 4.10 gears in his 98 jeep with the help of one of his military mechanics. I asked him if he and i could do it to my truck and he said it really isnt that hard... it just takes time and trial and error. He recommends that you reuse your old crush sleeve when putting it together until you get the pinion set right, becuase you dont want to have to keep buying crush sleeves. I'll ask him more about it today if i see him.

Message: Yupp. I used to live in Texas, my parents remember the registration there all too well.
At least it's down $15 from last year *shrug*.
I did think it was pretty funny that the cost of my registration was almost exactly what I was going to spend on those gears.
