What is the best cam to wake up a daily driver 318 to drag race? What cam are each of you using now? What are the results? If you could buy another one, would it be be?

I can get you a cam for your 318, whatever profile you want for $280.00, a Crower cam.

I can help you get a good cam design, but need to know what mods-- what have you done, what do you plan to do with the truck (street/strip, full race, etc).. Auto, or 5 speed?

My truck is a 94 model. But, in general a 318 92 and up will probably respond the same to a given cam. My only experience is with the RT cam.( 204 intake, 208 exhaust, .458 intake, .467 exhaust, 114 lobe centers, and 109 centerline.) I think it is a decent cam for a 318. I just wanted to know what other people had experienced with other cams. Get their feedback on horsepower increases, et. gains, and the power range of the cam. As far as Hughes Engines is concerned or anybody else for that matter, I would rather hear from someone that has tried a certain cam instead of talking to someone trying to sell you something. Some of these places make some unbelieveable claims.

I think you missed my point.. a 'generic' cam may or maynot be the best route-- with more information, you can have a cam taylored to your setup... I have been a tester with Crower with cam designs for the magnum engines, I sell their stuff-- plus I use it.

I personally run a custom crower cam, it has a effective lift of .512/.512 with 1.7 ratio rockers, a 208/204 duration (you read that right, shorter on the exhaust).. a 111 cl (forgot the rest-- I have the info at home)... With RT heads, 1.92 valve (non ported), mopar headers, mopar m1-4bbl intake, F&B 52mm TB, K&N, 1.7 Crower roller rockers, MSD-6a, full 3" exhaust through stock cat with 2-2.5" pipes from a flowmaster 40 series-- 290 hp @ 5450 rpm, 325 torque at 3800 rpm. Idle is nice, runs great, makes 100hp over stock at 5000 rpm, and 110+ more torque than stock at 5000 rpm too. At stock peak levels (4550 rpm for HP and 3300 rpm torque), I exceed the 204 stock rating at 245. torque at 315 vs. 270 stock.

I'll be running another cam in the near future to get more test info---

13.98 @ 98.5 mph NA
12.625 @ 108.5 mph with a 100 shot of N20

I was running the KRC 210 cam in my old 318. 210/220 512/512 on a 112, I have no #'s for you but it has a nice power band and a very sweet lope. I ran the R/T cam first and it is a waste of money.

I use the Hughes 1418AL in my 318. Check my specs on the Drag-Truk site.
http://www.dragtruk.com/ENTRIES/20KM1FD2KWBP.html

My time slip shown there BEFORE the cam change was run under better weather conditions than with the Hughes cam. Still had a great improvement and driveability is unchanged from the R/T cam.

Recently ran a better 13.74 but the time slip print is so light I can't scan it.

Thanks guys. This is what I wanted. I think the info Dakota owners provide is more meaningful to me. When you visit some of these companies websites, it is hard to tell the facts from the hype a lot of the times. I know of a couple of cams that advertised to provide tremendous horsepower gains, but the trucks I have seen the times on with these cams are not that impressive. I don't know all the variables involved in each case, so that it why I think it is important to ask as many people their experiences with the parts they chose to make their trucks faster. Who knows the cams that I an refering to may be some of the best out there. Who knows what may have caused these trucks to perform the way they did. I am just going on the claimed gains of the manufactures sometimes don't add up to the it actual ets. At least to me they don't appear to add up. I know I don't know everything because there is no way to try everything that makes these trucks go fast. Please send more info guys. I am interested in what all of have to say.

rtdkota, I have a 94 auto 318 with 3.55 gears. I have instaled a homebrew throttle body with a modified beer barrel intake. I have a MP computer for it also. I plan to install a Split Second PSC1-003 or a ARC2-NE with one of their air/fuel ratio meters. I am going to install headers with a 3" single exhaust with no cat. I figure 3" is big enough for a 318. I am going to stay with the stock heads for now as they probably flow enough for a street ride. I have a friend that is a professional engine builder that I will get to port the heads later. I will choose a cam that I can use with the injector sync set at +6. I probably will go with some roller rockers also. Don't know whether they will be 1.6's or 1.7's. Depends on the cam. The truck will be a daily driver, but that doesn't mean I want some tame cam in it. My last Dakota ran in the 13's so you know where I'm headed.

Do you plan on getting in the 13s with the 3.55 gearing??? That's gonna be the major hold up for you... 13s with a 94 318 can easily be done with what you've described.

The jury is still out on the BB intake mod-- a 2bbl- EGR M1 would do you wonders.

I have did it before with 3.55 gears. Run 13's that is. I may go with 3.90's this time because I fully expect to be in the low 12's. Use to race on the street with my truck. Would do 106 in the quarter. Raced a lot of Chevy's. Almost every one would have nitros on it. A lot of people accused me of having nitros also and not owning up to it. Well, I didn't have it and didn't want it. I would run anybody that drove a daily driver street vehicle. I saw a guy the other day that asked me if I still had the truck that had the juice hooked to it. I couldn't do anything, but shake my head no and laugh. Anyway, with what I have learned since I had my first Dakota I would be disappointed if I didn't run in the 12's.
