Subject: Need Tire Advice on 2001 2WD Dak QUICK!

Message:
Guys Im looking for some replacement tires for my truck now since the old ones lasted for like 33,000 lol. I have right now 255/65R16's, and theres not much of a choice for performance tires in that size, well none. I really would hate to frig up my speedo and odo with some akward size to so what would work for me? I want a really wide tire but with enough sidewall to look good on my stock ride height 2WD. What have you guys used?

Thanks,
Seth Robbins

performance is in the eye of the beholder...with a 16" you wont get much sympathy from the r/t guys with a really stupid size LOL i'd kill for your selection!!!
anyway, a change from a 65 to a 70 or a 65 to a 60 or even 55 wouldnt look bad...especially on a 2wd truck..and your speedo would NOT be off by all that much...yea, numbers talk, and a lot of guys on this board ARE really intelligent (no sarcasm), but in the real world, the speedo doesnt seem to change that much...not to mention factory speedos arent that accurate anyway...bleh...but for all purpose tires *depending on where you live* you just cant go wrong with the price and performance (for lack of better words) of a bfg t/a...if they made em in my size id have em.
good luck!!

does anyone make a 275/60/16?

If so this is probably a TON cheaper... it was much cheaper on my 2000 with the 15" rims... another note is that if it si a 2wd, run whatever size you want on the front. right now I have 255/60/15's on the fron and 275/60/15's on the back... the previous 245/60/15's were too small...

I just checked Tire Rack and they had 16 different tires in 255/65-16. Pirelli does make a 275/60-16 in a P-Zero.

"factory speedos arent that accurate anyway"

Federal law requires them to hold +/-3%. That equates to +/-1.8 MPH at 60. Sounds pretty accurate to me.

+-1.8mph is not that accurate... I have been stopped at jsut over that (4mph) once... +-.5 mph is more like it....

275-60/16's by both Toyo and Pirelli. They're both V rated (150 MPH), so that should be a great fit for your truck DMSDAK. I'm going to put them on mine if I don't find some good R/T wheels soon.

Demon, isn't that tire a tad too wide for 8" rims? I thought 275 was as far as we 16x8 inchers could push it...

Nope, I've had them on there for a while now. Not too bad of a tire but a bit too much flex for my tastes. (I should just get a full on truck tire next time). BFG used to make a 315/55R16 that was speced for 16x8, but noone has any of them anymore.

yea...the federal government SAYS a lot of things and DOES them very differently LOL
im just trying to state that with bouncing needles, slightly imperfect cruis control and all sorts of other things, factory speedos are not something i'd bet the ranch on to be accurate... when i first joined this site, someone corrected my math for me (correctly i might add) to give me the final ratio for my truck with a toyo 60 series...think about it...truck tires wear down...you can lose 1/4" tread (total) on a big a/t tire...so wouldnt that right there make the 'perfect' factory speedo calibrations inaccurate?..
im really just messin around here, please dont get all pissy :)

No way, not gonna get pissy, just sharing what I've learned. As for tire wear, you're right. In fact, if you have 13/32" usable tread depth on a new tire, at the end of its life the diameter will have decreased by more than 3/4". That's just what they have to certify them to on test mules in a lab.

holy god....3/4" tread wear!!! thats pretty crazy for not being a mud tire!

then again...after 4 months ive already lost 3/16" of an inch on my rear tires (toyo 60 series)

yikes

You're halfway there! 3/16" wear, top and bottom = 3/8" total diamter reduction (half of 3/4").

Darn Daks are hell on tires, aren't they?? I rotated mine at 6000 miles and now it pulls to the right a little just because of the stagger with a shorter right front!
