Subject: Cold-Air Induction, Best One Till K&N FIPK?
IP: Logged

Message:
Since my truck is what I called 'lost' (has been on the car-carrier to NY from Ridgefield NJ since 4/18), I've spent some time on the NET looking at cold-air induction systems, till K&Ns FIPK comes out in the summer for the 2001 4.7

What would be best true 'cold-air' system for a temporary mod till the FIPK:

1)Airaid, which looks like you replace the airbox lid with their unit, using the stock tubing to the TB (does have a sort of heatshield)

2)IntensePerformance's Z-tube which looks like it connects directly to the TB with no airhat or heatshield (BTW, they'll have a new 'Flo-Pro filter out soon)

What flows the best cold air with the least restriction, thus giving the best HP/TQ gains? I'm kinda of locked into choosing between these two, unless there is something else out there in the same price range with a proven record of gains.

FWIW, I'm gonna go with the Flowmaster Delta 50 Series Catback system and wait on Hypertechs Power Programmer III (also due out in the summer) for the PCM...not sure if Jet Chip's Stage II product would be any better...also will put in Royal Purple Synthetic 5w30 oil and Mobil1 filter, basically the extent of my 'go fast' mods after my new truck has 500 or so miles on it.
(not sure if the 180 degree thermostat is really needed)

Look on truckperformance.com at the Volant. It has a plastic tube (like K&N genII) for reduced heat transfer and it removes the airhat for better air flow. It also has some sort of small heat shield around the filter. It looks like a good design but I have not heard much about it on a 4.7. I have a post on this forum about it but no one has answered so far.

That Volant system does look interesting and your right, using a couple of search engines doesn't bring up much info on it nor can I found the company's web page.

What I did find where a bunch of posts about how bad the K&N filter is, with K&N admitting they only block 97% of debris while others block 98%, thats a 50% increase in particle flow (not air flow)...so confused!

MACE. That sucks big time!! Been lost over a week on a trip that is just a few hundred miles?? I am guessing I am in Vancouver. My ship date is April 30th and I am worried how long that prosses will take if I live on the other side of the continent?

Actually, I'd say around 100 miles or less from NJ to my dealer...spoke to him yesterday, they have today for delivery, we'll see.

Once the railcar drops off your truck, both DC and the railcar company say it is now up to the dealer for getting a status on shipping...I had the same problem with a 1998 Sahara being shipped to CT, it seemed it 'waited' in the railcar lot for at least 10 days to get a 'ride' to Danbury.

Re: the Volant, there sure isn't a lot of info out there, hit up the DML, not one 'testimonial' or anyone posting back with experience on the system.

Don't know if you've found this page for the Volant Cool Air Intake:

http://www.volantperformance.com/Products/productsframe.html

The 2001 4.7L part number is 26847.

Here is some verbage from the web page;

Volants new innovative design is revolutionizing the way a true cold air intake system should be made. Our premium cool air intake systems are designed to pull cold air from outside your engine compartment from a completely sealed box. All systems are made with an X-Link polyethylene material to avoid the air intake box from conducting heat as would metal, but to insulate the filter from pulling hot air from your engine.

Some boxes also give the enthusiast an opportunity to add accessories to scoop cool air into the filter box giving them that extra edge. Volant Cool Air Intakes are Dyno proven to gain up to 18 horsepower and maintain a gain during hot weather where others lack. Volant was established in 1999 and has grown rapidly due to the style and performance that we have proved thanks to our customers.

This system may be at the top of my list till K&Ns GEN II FIPK comes out, but I'd like to see some testimonials against both units...Volant only claims 8HP and 15FT/LBs of torque gains for the 4.7 though

Thanks for the info MACE. I was having a lot of trouble finding that web site. This might be my final decision on which air intake to use. I think the blue filter will match nicely - hehehe.

Bet ya saw those Volant install pictures at their site for the 4.7 Dakota, blue filter and all.

At truckperformance.com, they're advertising the unit at 15% off for another 7 days (spend your refund money)...a long URL:

http://www.truckperformance.com/products/?cartID=20010430104904152.211.21.50&searchtype=d&urlsubcategory=Air+Management&productcategory=AIR+INTAKE+KITS&sortorder=&brandname=VOLANT&sf1=DODGE&sf2=2001&sf3=DAKOTA&sf4=4.7L

Botom line, normally $223.38, on sale for $189.87

The Airaid system (using stock tubing and airhat) costs $141, roughly same gains.

IntensePerformance Z-tube with no heat shield costs $225, I haven't seen them quote their gains.

Quickd with no heat shield (and K&N Filter) costs $160. I haven't seen their quotes on gains, also read they may no longer exist, anyone know this for a fact?
