 Subject: Tranny slipping thoughts

An observation; I bought my Dak from a good friend who swears that he never had transmission slipping problems (He also never had a single mod either)
I was wondering if there is a correlation between my mods and the tranny slippage. Specifically my removing the clutch fan assembly, my thinking is that this allows the engine to spin more freely thereby overpowering our already weak transmission.
Just wanted to get any ideas on whether this makes sense or not.

Did you check to make sure that you dont have a fluid leak. Make sure that you have fluid in your tranny..

Also, it slipped again today driving to work, i was doing about 35mph, jumped on it to pass, when it down shifted, it missed and bounced off the rev limiter..... talk about anxiety :)

Check for overfill or underfill.
Before blaming the fluid (or mods) check to see if it was filled properly. No shop I know of takes the effort to properly check the level.
In lieu of driving the vehicle 10 miles to heat the tranny up as the manual says, the shop will simply let it idle at best, which does not do the job. They could easily underfill or overfill it so drive it 10-15 miles and check when hot with the engine running. Check your manual on exactly how to do the check. Normally you must be up to operating temperature and sitting very level.
Overfilling can cause aeration which puts air bubbles into the oil, reducing the oil's ability to provide film and making the oil "compressible" instead of incompressible, which would interfere with the operation.
If your level is okay then explore other issues.

The fluid is actually overfilled a bit, didn't realise that, that could cause any problems, I am getting ready to do a filter change very soon though

Try "Type F" fluid--it should help! I have been running it for about a year in our Dak with great results!
That's my $0.02!
Question: How do you like the underdrive crank pulley? Is it made by ASP?

I have some Amsoil Tranny fluid i'm going to try though
The Pulley is by ASP, it seems to help that little bit, (could be in my mind though...lol) My charging runs a little low at idle, but other wise it's good to go

I just got my 2001 Dakota out of the shop where it spent the better part of September with a slipping transmission. Come to find out it is a known problem with the 45RFE and 5-45RFE auto transmissions. The problem is called "DRAIN BACK". What is happening is somthing internal to the transmission is not closing in order to keep the tourque converter filled with trans fluid. This causes the transmission to slip when it is first started after it has sat over night or for as little as one hour. Dodge was trying to use my truck to get to the root cause of the problem and they finally gave up and replaced the entire transmission.

On your fan clutch replacement- the FC is actually supposed to allow more power by allowing fan slippage at higher speeds where airflow is enough to provide cooling, but I've seen more fan clutches FAIL leading to low speed/idle overheats than I care to remember. My 28 years twisting wrenches says this is a GOOD mod. I'm interested in all the other responses to your trans slip, as I have a '92 Dak that has the same problem...

Just an update:
I did the fluid & filter swap today, drained 6 quarts of fluid out, BUT only needed 5 quarts (Amsoil ATF) to bring it up to just below full when properly warmed up...
After I was comfortable that I had done the job correctly I took it for some hard runs, ensuring that it had to downshift quite frequently. Guess what, she works like a champ now. My thanks go out to Steven Roark for pointing out the overfill foaming correlation, my next door neighbor races car as a hobby and he also confirmed the overfill problem,
Another observation; I found a 3" magnet in the bottom of the Tranny pan located over a manufactured dimple, guess good ideas do get into production vehicles, it did it's job just great, their was only a small amount of metal anywhere else in the pan
Sorry for the ramble, I’m just tickled pink that my Tranny is now healthy
