Subject: Cam for '96 2.5? IP: Logged
Message: Ok I just bought a 1996 Dakota Sport with the 2.5. I realize now that this engine is differfent than most of the 2nd gen engines, but is it the same as all the 3rd gens? If so what cams are you guys using and are you passing smog test here in Texas. What else can I do? Looking for about 30 horses. Thats reasonable isnt it?
Thanks
Dustin

Message: I don't have a 4-banger anymore but if you have a mopar catalog check out these cams. p4529656,p4529657,p4529658,p4529659,p4529660. They are listed in my magnum engine book. They show it fits the ohv 4cyl. As far as smog goes. I had no problem getting my 318 to pass the new test with a performance cam. What part of Texas are you at. I am in Ft. Worth

Message: ~~Ummm...I already have an engine that works fine. Thanks though.
~~I also live in the metroplex. I am a student at UTA and live in Arlington.
~~Let me ask yall this. I am a bit confused as to which motor I have. It seems that every other earlier 2.5 is a Overhead Cam. Did they change engines in 1996, and is this the same one they use in the current Dakotas? Is there some website out there that will explain to me what exactly I have? Any places on this site or others that will give me the stock specs for the current cam in the engine? Trying to find info on what Ive got but it seems to be hard to find.
Thanks
Dustin

Message: Dustin,
If I am correct they switched to ohv in 95. My first truck was a 4cyl. dakota and then I bought a 97 when the new body style came out. I think it is the same as the new ones now. I don't have much experience on what to do to them. All I did was put a k&n in when I owned them.
I go to UTA as well. Shoot me an e-mail.
