Subject: Please, please help me decide! IP: Logged
Message: I try to be an educated consumer, given that, I am still trying to decide whether to order a Super Crew or Quad Cab. I've test driven both (4x4) and actually the SC torques up the long grade out of my town better. However, for garage management and parking I want the QC! The 4.7 is out of the question, I love low end torque and don't care about speed. Now what I also need to know is this: Do the shorty headers (JBA and Gibson) that are available for the 5.9 really improve performance that much? and part two: Given the inconvenience involved (cats and sensors and cutting and welding) are tri-ys (PP Headers) definetly worth the extra work? If I were to get the QC, I would also probably put the 7:1 rockers in and get as much cold air to it as I could (not necessarily with a cotton filter!). However, that would be the extent of the mods! In theory, would these mods improve low end torque? Thank you for any and all input!

Message: Wait on the 5.7 Hemi. Due out this year in the 2500 Ram's for sure. I think it will worth the wait myself.

Message: Well you'll get nice torque with the 5.9. But, to be honest, when I put my JBAs on, I actually lost some low end, until I upgraded my throttle body too. I have the 3.9, but know other 5.9s who said the same thing. However, once they increased the air flow in (new intake - good idea) with a ported TB, the mods complimented each other.
97 3.9 CC Sport. JBA stainless headers, Borla Turbo XL stainless muffler & tip, 17 x10 Boyd Coddington Smoothies, FMS injectors, V8 TB, Quick D stainless air intake, Have but not Installed yet: 5.9 litre 360

Message: What's wrong with the 4.7L torque. I have one and it has more towing capacity than the R/T's. It also has the 5 speed and it has no low end torque problems. It pulls like a banshie in the low end.
You might want to reconsider that engine choice if you are worried about garage and parking space with a 4 door truck.

Message: The 5.9L Quad Cab does not have the same
towing restrictions as the R/T...
The reason the R/T is downgraded to
2000lbs/200tw is because of the lowered
suspension and angle to the factory bumper.
If you install a class III/IV hitch to the frame
your towing capacity returns to its proper
amount.
The 5.9L V8 has a lot more torque than the
4.7L V8, but either engine would probably be
more than adequate for towing average
trailers. The biggest difference is that you can
get the 4.7L with a manual transmission, the
5.9L's are 4-spd autos only.
More aftermarket bolt-ons are available for the
5.9L at this time, but the 5.9L's production run
ends next year and the 4.7L's will see more
parts as they progress.
