Why does everyone with an auto tranny always say to take off the O.D. when racing someone? Does it really slow you down? I thought it would actually help in the long run.

the reason people take od off is so the truck stays in 3rd gear, 4th is overdrive and is to high unless your doin over 100. if you rev out 3rd gear your e.t.'s will be better cause 3rd pulls harder that 4th, and because the truck tends to shift into 4th early at higher speeds its better to make sure your're in third at a higher rpm so when you punch it at lets say 80 you dont have to worry about the gear not dropping.

anyone else???

Well besides the 4th gear, if you have a semi heavily modded car you will throw out your trans running that power in overdrive.

I don't think you have to worry about your O D kicking in when your foots on the floor. Unless maybe you bypassed the speed limiter and you are on the salt flats. Of course I am assuming you guys are spinning them small blocks to at least 7000 RPM.

My truck is geared to hit max rpm @ the end of the 1/4 in Drive. It never shifts into o.d. Turning it off made no difference in mine either. (Neither did lowering the tailgate, Brian). This old wives tale comes from some other brand of tranny where the O.D. actually put some kind of a load on it while in lower gears, someone once told me. I can't confirm that though.
