Note to self: if you're gonna take a car out for a joyride DO NOT post the owner's license plate number in a thread bragging about it.

Message: There would be farking murders! I would be calling the better buisness burrow and the news agencies and trying to set up a sting or something. Makes me glad I have an MSD 6AL. Whenever it goes into the shop I always set the rev limiter to 3000. If they say that something is wrong with the rev limiter I have them. That way i know they were fooling around and had no need too.

Message: Unfortnetly this is more common then most people care to belive. A good service writer/manager will not tolerate this type of behavior at his shop! I have worked at some places that this was not uncommon. So while it did need to be road tested it did not need to be road tested on the AutoBahn. While I do not think he should be fired he should be severly reprmanded. He should have to aploigise to her face for what he has done. She should agree to what his punishment should be. His hours should be cut back for the next four week's and he should have to pay for all required normal maintence service to her car out of his pocket for the next year. I think some comunity service like serviceing the city or county fleet after hours without pay might also be in order. They should also consider extending her power train warranty by a year. If you fire him he really does not learn a lesson. I really do not want him collecting unemployment or decideing to work on GM or Dodge vechiles. This way he loses money in his pay check and has to answere to her for all routine maintence.

Message: Sandman,
Not to start a flamer or anything, but I totally disagree with you. I would fire any one of my techs for treating a customer's vehicle like that after he made a formal apology to her face. I would not terminate him in front of her, that would be totally wrong. What he did was indescribable in my book; you just don't go tearing up other people's stuff whether it be their car, home, or anything else that is theirs and no one else's.
He won't be collecting unemployment, either, not in Texas based on the reason for termination.
Unfortunately, with the demand for techs in all of the major cities in Texas he'll probably have another job tomorrow and keep doing the same crap until caught again.
This is the very reason I've never let any vehicle I've ever owned into a shop for anything more than an alignment and never let it out of my sight. The service manager and the general manager should be held equally responsible as well. They hired him and it's their responsibility to manage him and the others to prevent crap like this from happening.

Message: I disagree, sort of. If they are doing burnouts and flying through town, exceeding speedlimits, then there is a problem. However sometimes when diagnosing certain problems you may need to run it at wide open throttle. Most service manuals even say to hook up the scantool, then accererate at wide open throttle to a certain speed to run certain monitor patterns. If someone is complaining that the engine idles rough it might be because it is carboned up from short trip driving, the best thing you can do is take it up on the thruway and run the crap out of it. I read the thread and obviouly he was beating on it, there was no need to go 140 and he probably should be disciplined but i'm saying don't freak out if you see a tech revving up your engine.

Message: Ya, You put your finger on the reason you do not fire him right away!!! You have to teach a leason first. Sometimes it is to easy on them if you just fire them right off the bat. I also think that if he was a young tech. sometimes young tech.'s do not think very far past their nose. It would be different if he was slacker and did not pull his own weight. THe combination I outline would realy make him misserable. I think I would try to get the local DA involved so all of this could be cort ordered. This would require compliance and his ass would be yours. If she wanted a new engine she would get it and it would be garnished from his wages. i would try my best to make it right by the customer and punish him at the same time. He would not do it again. If tech's were not in such short supplie fireing him would not be that bad but in this case it would be too easy.

Message: In a perfect world this would never happen. This is not a perfect world, and as such, a person taking a high performance vehicle to a shop and complaining about power and fuel curves should expect for the tech to drive the dog crap outa it.
I'm not saying the tech was correct in running the car a 140 mph, but. As a manager I would make him apologize to the owner and be responsible for any mechanical malfunctions of this auto for at least a year. (And advise him to use his brains and not brag about dogging a person’s vehicle on a worldwide forum.)
I take my vehicle to the shop (rarely) and leave it (almost never), and then I'm going to expect the tech to dog it (can't be no worse than what I do to it). This keeps me from getting my feelings hurt if I see them or read about them doing it. Geeze, it was a Mustang SVT, how else do you drive these things (I mean it is a performance car right)? If you want your car driven like a little old lady, don't take it in complaining of LOW PERFORMANCE ISSUES, or get a little old ladies car to drive.

Message: I think this is perfectly fine what the tech did with the car that is. I used to work for a Chevy dealership, and I had almost and Identical situation with a ZR1 corvette, losing power in 6th gear, was the issue he said. Well all too make the story short. I test drove it, and ran it out on the freeway and shifted into 6th gear about 130 and with that said 172 was not that far away and decide to make sure there was no power loss. Gave it back to the guy and said you've lost your mind, this thing is a monster. Turned out he was shifting way to early and all was done.
His License plate read "XXX-XXXX"
Just kidding.

Message: I made an earlier post about a dealer "testing" my Dakota. Took them 215 miles and a quarter inch of rubber off the rear tires to make sure the doors fit good. They had the truck for two weeks "waiting for parts". Everybody justifies what these a$$holes do but don't think about what happens if someone gets killed because "ace" really didn't know how to drive. Now days some slick atty will get the owner because he didn't make sure the dealer controlled how his vehicle was driven.Somewhat like a bartender paying for a drunks actions.

Message: They were replacing the doors because of rust. A warranty thing. Said they got defective door and had to send it back and wait for a new one. They apparently put the old ones back on to go cruising. Maybe they cruised without doors, you can do it in a Jeep.Inside the rear fenders was coated with rubber.
