Subject: HO Manifold insight IP: Logged
Message: Well .. after being curious from your recent post CW of what the stock manifold looked like on the inside, I took a gander at the inners of the HO manifold (through the MAP sensor hole) and they are different ...
Guess what's different ... the runners are shorter!
They start right at the bottom of the manifold rather than next to the exit port ... i.e. they only make a 270 deg. turn, not the full 360 deg! ..
this would explain why people report better pull at higher RPMs. It's not much of a change, but it makes a difference

Message: It does make a significant difference in throttle response as well. You can just feel that 4.7L wanting to blow right through the roof (so to speak). I think it may not be a big HP boost by adding one, but the engine response is definitely well worth it! This intake "might" work well on a boosted engine as well, what with the more direct airflow.

Message: maybe it'll be an extra HO manifold then :) hopefully it'll move the torque band up a little more in the RPMs ...
FYI, my stock dyno run had peak hp at 3700RPM (TQ peaked at 3000RPM .. well 2970 actually) .. pretty low if you ask me .. a lot of it is due to the elevation here .. about 3500' (well the airport is 3800' but that's the highest point in the city). It'd be nice to push that peak up to 4800 RPM or so.

Message: Canucker: I think you're the first person on this board that I've seen say that you want the torque up higher on the 4.7

Message: torque at a higher RPM = more hp = lower ET :)
I think the 4.7 has great potential for spinning up to the 6000RPM limiter (or 6500 if you have a flash) ... but there's no point going past 5000RPM in stock form .. there's no power there.

Message: My prediction is that we see some 7000+ motors out there in the future. Being relatively small for a V8 and OHC is a definite advantage. We have the forged crank, Crower rods and Ross pistons. Now all we need are the heads, some real ones from Dart or Trick Flow for example with battleship valve springs and enormous valves included. Add a real intake, large injectors, headers and the right cams and WOOHOO.
I'm really think once the demand is there, being driven by the need for parts to overhaul due to high mileage, that the aftermarket manufacturers will "wake up" and get this kind of stuff on the market.
Gibson Dual Sport, AirForce One air intake, Jet II, IAT, TPS, when are we gonna see some real parts??!!

Message: Canucker you want to email me the dyno results so that I can see them. As I have to deal with the same thin air. I am shooting for 6000 RPM shift points with a peak in the 5500 range. Where did you get it dynoed? Was it corrected for altitude? I want to get mine dynoed but spent the money on a winter beater/fixerupper.

Message: You've got mail CW.
Oh, I forgot to mention in my email that it wasn't corrected for altitude. It was measuring just raw torque values at the wheels.
Too bad you guys don't have a dyno at work eh? I know Derrick Dodge in edm. has one, but they're the only dealership I've heard of that does .. they used it to tune their shop truck to do the 1/4 in 13.01 sec.! (their shop truck is a cummins diesel 5spd I think) ... and that's a real 13.01 seconds, I saw it myself in Edmonton (Bud motorsports park .. 2200') it was pretty cool. (on street tires too!)

Message: I am currently modifying the old factory intake so that the runners are shortened by about 6 inches. I just got bored one day cut the ends off the intake to see the runners. I then got out 1 3/4" hole saw and drilled from the out side all the way through the runner.
Now the runner is shortened but I haven't found anyone to supply me with plastic weld reassemble everything back together. 8-1 3/4" holes tend to make it idle bad. LOL I used to get it at canadian tire. I will probably have to order it on the net.
The actual intake runners vary a little but run in the 10-11" range. For a total intake runner of 14-15"s. I was hoping to put it on this weekend but it is still in pieces in the spare bedroom.

Check out this link Eastwood Company. They have a plastic welding kit. Choose plastic and glass repair on the left side of the page. Then the plastic repair link.
I get all my porting supplies and metal polishing stuff from Eastwood. They have some neat things.
