I got bored and cut the end off the old intake manifold to my 4.7. I wanted suggestions as to how to mod it. I was thinking about shortening the runners and maybe filling in the plenum some.

I do have a pic of the inside of the intake after I cut the end off. You can see in the pic where the runner starts. The runner ends on the outside at the same point. That is a 360° turn. Even worse than the 5.2 and 5.9 that benifits from the M-1.

Is it made of plastic, if so you could epoxy a piece of plexiglass down the middle vertically and turn it into a dual plane manifold. Who know maybe with the long runners it will boost the torque like a edelbrock performer Rpm?

Well you could make one out of aluminum if Hp is the only goal! You can weld one up and dyno it in the same week. You must have alot of free time on your hands! I thought that those northern girls were susposed to keep their boyfriends warm at night???LOL Have you tried calling KRC? They might have an early prototype you can play with!

Thanks clevite 77. DTW must have it blocked.

Yes the manifold is good for torque because it is the stock unit. I want something that will let it pull easily in the upper RPM like the M-1.

The whole idea of this was cheap. I had thought of making my own manifold but that would take alot of work and is out of my range of capibilitys as I can't weld anything like aliminum. I did email marty but it will probably take him a long time to get back to me. I am thinking I will reduce the runner length to about 12 inches.

Alright never mind I screwed up on my measurments and ended up with a 10" runner which is way to short. Might still try it for the hell of it.

Please don't take offense, CW. You must have meant that the manifold runner takes "a 90 degree turn", as opposed to a 360 degree one. If it was a 360 degree turn, it would be a loop...that, I'd like to see!

Let us know how it performs with the 10" runners, though.

No unfortunately it is a 360° turn. In the pic you cand see where the runner starts, it ends on the outside of the manifold in the same spot. Sucks and I am trying to improve upon it. I may buy another used manifold off of someone who has done the HO swap if this one is a total flop.

My bad, CW. I thought it was a shot taken down a runner, not through the inside, or, "valley", of the manifold.

Yeah that is the plenum area from the rear side of the manifold. I cut the end cap off so I could get in there and see what was what in there.

I "felt" that it gave me quicker throttle response, it made the air intake and exhaust a bit louder and did not reduce the performance at all.

Got mine off one of our members for $50, so I am happy with it. As for paying $100 for a new one, money could be better spent towards something else like a new TB unless you can find some dyno results from the addition of a TB spacer to know if actually changes the torque characteristics positively. Everyone has a theory on why it shouldn't make a difference or work as advertised on the 3.9, 5.2 and 5.9 due to intake design. If I remember correctly, Bernd did dyno his 3.9 Dak after adding a TB spacer and it showed no change. The 4.7 intake is different and it "may" work according to threads I have read, still no hard numbers have I seen. Maybe someone will read this and provide real results. Good-luck!

I am happy with the HO intake just looking for more thats all. Just a cheap experiment. The 4.7 intake has more of a turn in it than the 5.2/5.9. I can't see that being good for flow.

This seems to be a packageing trend in OEM intake manifolds. My Mom's Toyota Tundra is the same basic design as ours. Her intake looks like the air makes a 360 then travels down a varticle 5 inch straight into the heads. I can only guess that it is a packageing issue. Her intake is alot bigger then ours and it is aluminum instead of glass filled nylon. It will be interesting to see what Marty comes up with. My 4 Cylinder runners are only about 10" long and shaped like the letter J with a plenum box at the top.

CW ... well you know mine will be up for grabs soon, but I think I might disect it too and see what I can come up with ...

here's a thought, instead of shortening the runners, why not dremel a hole in them closer to where they exit? and effectively bypass the big long runner. Do you follow me? it would effectively give you a shorter runner, but keep the larger plenum and save you from having to try and cut and paste the whole thing togetehr ... I think that's what I'm going to try.

That is exactly what I did. I took a 1 3/4" hole saw and drilled from the out side All the way throught to the inside shortening up the runner. I got some plasic weld to seal up the holes in the out side. Walla shorter runners in about 10 mins. Now I will clean up the manifold with a dremel and seal it back up. I was hoping to do it this weekend but I am going to be working on my winter beater. I should take some pics I guess.

Talked to Marty at KRC performance and he said "Peak torque for the factory 1.87 valve is 3200 rpm, which is 17.69 tuned intake". I ended up with about 15" total including the head. I wanted to be a little shorter to push the upper RPM better. It is a go for the modified intake.
